Choosing to have a more active lifestyle can have many health benefits that can make you healthy and lower your risk for disease. Just like many Americans I have a non-stop busy schedule that starts at 6AM and runs until 12AM every day. Incorporating going to the gym is often hard, especially when you have so much going on; however it is not hard to incorporate some healthy choices for an active lifestyle. This article will look at 10 ways to have a more active lifestyle, and how to incorporate some of them into your day.
Taking the stairs instead of the elevator, or walking to work instead of taking a taxi or the subway is a great way to have a more active lifestyle. You don’t live in a city? Even if you don’t live in a city and you must drive to work, think about walking for even 15 minutes to 30 minutes during your lunch break, it is a great way to get some exercise and fresh air.
I know pushups may seem like a dreaded way to achieve an active lifestyle, but with practice, determination, and effort pushups can be a great way to get in shape in very little time. Doing pushups for 10 minutes per day can help you get a toned up core and it also burns more calories with the extra muscle being produced.
3. Have a Dog?
I know how easy it is to just let the dog run into the yard in the morning to do its duty, this often happens because of laziness or morning grogginess; however take a short 10 minute walk with the dog instead, that way you get some exercise in before work.
4. Move Around as Much as Possible
In a modern world there are many ways to take the “convenient” or “easy” way out when walking downtown or even at the airport. Walk and move around to get the blood flowing, not only will it help your health to move around as much as possible, but it will also help you stay in shape.
Doing housework such as cleaning and cooking are great ways to get active doing mundane tasks. Moving around while cleaning and cooking can actually burn a lot of calories, and who doesn’t like a clean house or home cooked meal?
6. Grab an Apple Instead of a Donut
Incorporating an active lifestyle into your daily routine starts with what you have for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Eating healthy makes you feel better and one good choice leads to many more.
7. Bike Riding
During the summer and fall bike riding is a great way to incorporate physical activity into your day while doing something fun. Biking with a friend or loved one is a fun way to bond without spending any money, and it gets you active!
8. Choose Active Weekend Activities
Instead of going to the movies one weekend during the summer or fall why not try a nature hike, or mountain hike? Being outdoors and hiking is a great way to get active during a normal week, it is also free or a very low state park fee, which sure beats spending $50 at the movies!
Online shopping has been increasing in popularity due to its convenience and ease; however going to the stores in person is a great way to get active while doing something you like.
10. Use the Treadmill While Watching TV
One of my favorite activities at the gym is watching TV while on the treadmill or bike machine; the TV takes your mind off the workout. If at all possible purchase a treadmill and put it in the same room as a TV and workout for 30 minutes while watching your favorite show!
