15 Fun People for Geeks to Follow on Twitter

by wet bin

Guess who’s on Twitter nowadays? Everyone! Many have jumped onto the micro-blogging site Twitter.com to see what all the fuss is about. This includes companies who see the potential for free promotion and word-of-mouth publicity as well as fan communities.

I’ve gathered a list of some of the most interesting companies and people that I follow on Twitter, and I think that pop culture aficionados will also enjoy these. While this list is by no means exhaustive, it can still provide you with plenty of reasons to either join Twitter or follow your favorite companies or stars to see what they’re talking about.

Of course, it is important to make sure you aren’t following a fake. Many celebrities have spoken out against the website, saying there is not currently a good authentication process. So follow at your own risk. But I do believe that all of these are legitimate, and I personally get lots of interesting news and updates via these every day. Let’s break it down by category:

Star Trek-Related Twitter Account

http://twitter.com/BrentSpiner – If you’re a Trekkie, you already know who this is. If you’re not, you’re missing out.

http://twitter.com/levarburton – Butterfly in the sky, you can go twice as high…with this Trek alum and the man responsible for “Reading Rainbow”. If you don’t love LeVar Burton, something is wrong with you. Deeply, deeply wrong.

http://twitter.com/wilw – This is Wil Wheaton, the actor who played Wesley Crusher on Star Trek:TNG. Only now he’s all grown up and he’s quite the amazing writer. Witty, funny, and engaging. You’re welcome.

Disney-Related Twitter Accounts

http://twitter.com/DisneyPixar – Pixar just started this account literally days ago. I expect great things. Then again, I have a deep and abiding love for all things Pixar. It’s unconditional love. So I’m biased.

http://twitter.com/DisneyPictures – Disney movies and all the word on the street about them. I hope for tweets on the upcoming, “The Frog Princess” and, “Rapunzel”.

http://twitter.com/DisneyD23 – This is Disney’s recently created official fan club. They’re having a convention soon, from which I can imagine only interesting tweets will flow.

Comedians and Actors

http://twitter.com/rifftrax – This is one half of the creative team responsible for MST3K and they’re at it again. Naturally, the tweets are all snark and that’s just the way I like it.

http://twitter.com/rainnwilson – You know Dwight from the Office, meet his maker. Rainn Wilson, actor extraordinaire. Rainn is a little more thought-provoking than Dwight.

http://twitter.com/alyankovic – Yes, it’s him. I don’t care what you say, the man is brilliant!

http://twitter.com/JohnCleese – Yes, THE John Cleese of, “Monty Python and the Flying Circus” is on Twitter. There is video evidence to back this up if you click through to his website, and all his tweets are wonderful. Then again, it’s so easy to hear his voice in your head as you’re reading what he writes. So that helps. It’s a gift, people.

Muppet-Related Tweets

http://twitter.com/MuppetNewsflash – This is a fan site, but this guy is serious about his love of Muppets. He doesn’t miss a beat, and neither will you if you follow him.

http://twitter.com/hensoncompany – Yep, the Henson Company. Need I say more?

Pop Culture Tweets

http://twitter.com/ForcesOfGeek – Forces of Geek is kind of like AintitCool.com, but with a wider variety of news and less complaining in the comments section.

http://twitter.com/thinkgeek – Geek merchandise that you’ll like if you like any of the above.

http://twitter.com/TheOnion – The fake news at its best.
