As society progresses, the amount of young couples having children is steadily decreasing. Instead, both men and women are making the decision to hold off on having children until they are older, more mature, more financially stable and more progressed in their careers. The decision to wait to have children is looked down upon by many, but the choice to put off having children is a wise one that has many benefits for those who choose this route of life.
Reason #1: Waiting until you are older and more “mature”
The decision to withhold having children until you have matured is not unheard of, and is a reason that many women cite as their motivating factor behind the delaying childbearing. Young adults today are less apt to be as mature or self-dependent as their forefathers. This fact is exhibited in the number of college students and college graduates who still live with their parents, the number of young adults who are unable to maintain a steady job, and the amount of people who are in large amounts of credit card debt because they could not control their spending. Waiting until maturity sets in and you are able to take care of yourself and your significant other is a good reason to put off having kids.
Reason #2: Waiting until you are more financially stable
Financial pressure is one of the leading causes of divorce, so it’s no surprise that many couples choose to put off childbearing until they have their finances in control. Children are definitely an added expense, and it is not a bad idea to consider how much you want your child to have before getting pregnant. For example: do you want your child to take dance lessons? Musical lessons? Do you want them to play sports? How do you feel about designer clothing for children? These can all be added expenses that many adults do not take into consideration before having children. There are also health expenses in relation to children, such as braces and eyeglasses.
Reason #3: Waiting until you have progressed in your career
The concept of waiting to have children until a career is “well underway” is not an unusual one. With today’s over-saturated job market, it can be difficult to gain and maintain a steady job, not to mention a decent-paying career. Many couples choose to put off having children in order to make sure that they are well situated in their career so that having a child will not negatively influence their social standing in the workplace.
Regardless of motivations to have or not have children, it is important to note that more and more people are putting off having children. There are just as many reasons to have children at a young age as their are to wait, so it is truly a personal choice. However, the benefits to waiting for children are not to be overlooked as they truly are important to take into consideration.
