With Halloween right around the corner, what is your child going to be? Are you tired of spending anywhere from 20.00 and up for a costume that your child may never wear again? Or better yet, you go out and spend that 20.00 only to see twenty other children on Halloween night dressed just like your child! I too was having the exact same feelings as you and set upon a quest to find affordable yet unique and easy Halloween costume ideas that my children would love. I am going to give you some unique, quick, easy and affordable costume ideas for you to use with your children this Halloween season.
Static Cling- To make this unique Halloween costume have your child dress in all one color (no patterns, just solids work best) then take some safety pins and pin various things all over their clothing, front and back. Some ideas of what to pin on the clothing could include things as : socks(pinned separately and in different locations), knee high hosiery, hand towels, knit gloves, small shirts(such as baby t-shirts). After you pin all the items sporadically on your child’s clothing then use some gel or hair spray and spike up your child’s hair in a wild and crazy manner.
Bunch of Grapes- This one is an oldie but goodie in the unique Halloween costume hall of fame. Have your child wear red, green or purple leotard and tights. Then blow up balloons that correspond with the color you chose, either red, green or purple. After you tie the balloons, take safety pins and attach the balloons to the leotard. Make sure you use the tied off end to attach the balloons with the safety pins. Try to put the balloons closely together to resemble a bunch of grapes. If you chose green grapes make sure you use light green in color so you can use dark green for the hat. Get a dark green stocking cap and then you can either make your own leaves from felt and attach to the stocking hat with safety pins or you can buy leaves from a store and attach with safety pins. Don’t forget to use face paint to match the color of the stem.
A Pile of Leaves- Have your child wear a sweatshirt, orange, yellow or brown would work best, to make this unique Halloween costume. Take safety pins and attach leaves all over your child’s sweatshirt. You can either make leaves from felt or you can purchase leaves from a store. Try to have the leaves vary in color and size so they look more like fallen leaves from a tree. You can use face paint in a swirl of colors to blend in or just use one color. Buy a stocking cap, again in one of the colors listed above, and attach leaves to that as well. Then cut holes into a big leaf bag and have your child step through the holes and pull the bag up about mid stomach and tie the bag so that it will not fall down. The child’s pants should match whatever color bag you are using. To make it more interesting you can even attached a small play rake to the bag.
Dice- This unique Halloween costume requires two people to wear. Take two big square boxes. Cut the top and bottom off so you end up with just the four walls. Paint the outside of the boxes white or red. Then either cut out some black dots from construction paper and glue onto the boxes or paint black dots on the boxes that will resemble the amounts on a pair of dice. You can step through the open hole and use suspenders to attach from the front of the box to the back.
