Two days ago, Hannah Klamecki, 5, of Villa Park, Ill, was reported missing by her parents. The girl, who was thought to have drowned, with her grandfather on a boating trip, shocked rescuers when, after 40 hours of being alone in the woods, appeared naked, scratched and holding raspberries.
Hannah and her grandfather, David Klamecki, 62, were last seen Wednesday evening on the river near Momence, about 45 miles south of Chicago.
“I was scared last night when everybody was gone, I went searching all over the world to look for the cottage (where her grandparents live).” The little girl said.
She told searchers she was wearing floats on her arms and pulled herself from the water with a branch.
Although Hannah had scratches and was a little dehydrated she is in good health condition and was taken to the Riverside Medical Center in Kankakee spokesman Carl Maronich said, as a precaution for the girl sake.
Authorities believe the river current swept the girl away from a small island where she and her grandfather had stopped to swim and to the shore of the mainland where she eventually was found. Locals know the area is notoriously treacherous and it is knows as “Whirlpool Bend” because of strong currents from the union of the river and two tributaries. Hannah’s parents feared the worst when they heard that Hannah and her grandfather were in that area. Fear increased when Hannah’s grandfather body was found Friday near Whirlpool Bend.
However, everything changed in Hannah’s home when parents were told that Hannah was alive and well. Happiness came and cheering and screaming were heard. The girl was reunited with her parents, who were waiting with family and friends at the grandparents’ home.
A big search effort was set as soon as Hannah and her grandfather were reported missing. Police and volunteers on foot were scouring the whole are where they were seen for the last time, near Momence, and near Whirlpool Bend. Teams of divers were also working with special sonar gear to detect things underwater. A helicopter was also working from the air.
Fortunately after two days Hannah Klamecki has been reunited with her parents after spending more than two nights alone in the woods near the Kankakee River where she had been boating with her grandfather. The parents claim that Hannah’s has survived thanks to two factors: God’s intervention and Hannah’s training received by her grandfather who unfortunately has died.
