Students were surprised to enter high school one day 4 years ago to find two massive metal detectors a few inches away from the front door. These two metal detectors were the school’s way of discouraging the sneaking in of weapons. The new system looked the part but did not play it. Students were told to form two lines and remove jewelry, keys, and coins and place them inside of the tray, those who walked through the metal detectors and caused them to beep were patted down by either of the two weapon-less officers.
The next stop were the slump of tables pushed together, these tables were where the students were supposed to place their bags onto the tables so that they could be searched for weapons, and anything suspicious. The students who formed two single files dumped their backpacks and purses onto the table, there were only two school officials who were assigned to search these bags, the bags were coming faster than they could check them, some bags were just being felt, other bags were being skipped, no bags were being thoroughly checked. The school’s safety system had too many holes, and students found ways to sneak knives, drugs, and guns in. Students who wanted to avoid the metal detectors just snuck around the sides of the school building, and waite in front of the side doors for any student to let them in,becuase of lack of securuty many weapons were snuck in this way. This is a true story of my high school’s security measures 4 years asgo. Many schools are trying to protect their students but they have yet come to a sound plan, the answer to sound protection is simple, schools have to be controlled like high prisons.
Schools need to have their students in uniform. The purposes of this uniform is to; prevent students from representing gangs, and wearing subliminal messages on their shirt that might spark a fight, or argument, to prevent theft of expensive designer wear clothing, it has happened where students have fought an individual student for a piece of clothing, and to prevent students from hiding weapons in their clothing. The uniforms should be light weight and fitting.
Schools need to have reliable detectors, and need to assign officials to properly search students, and their bags. Detectors along with an official should be placed at every entrance of the school, to prevent students from sneaking in with weapons in an entrance that does not have a metal detector. In my high school students used to let each other in at the side entrance when they could not get in from the front. So it is important to have officials stand guard from the start of the school day (before any students arrive) to the end of the school day (when all students have left.)
Schools should have teachers, and visitors walk through the metal detector and have their belongings checked. In my high school teachers and visitors were exempt from going through the metal detector. Everyone should walk through that metal detector, even the school principal.
Schools should make it a rule for students to carry see through bags. Many young woman at my high school complained that see through bags were a violation of privacy, they did not want others to see their feminine products.
Schools should have at least 3 officials in each hall on every floor to monitor all the students as they move from class to class. Bathrooms should be guarded by officials.
Schools should have cameras on every floor, nook and cranny of the school, and these cameras should be watched by an official, the camera to official ratio has to be sufficient.
Schools should lock all side doors, and entrances that lead into the school, except for the front door.
Schools should lock the front entrance after a certain time, and should buzz in those who come in after that time.
