Introduction: In attempting to encourage some of my friends to not only post stories on Yahoo Voices (formerly called Associated Content) but to also get page views using social network sites like Twitter, I decided to post my guide to both benefit them and any of my other readers.
Joining Yahoo Voices In The First Place
To sign up to be one of Yahoo Voices many authors, use this link: https://contributor.yahoo.com/. It is free to sign up.
Yahoo Voices has all kinds of links and tutorials set up that will clearly guide you through the submission process.
I joined Associated Content on February 1 of 2009. I must admit that I am absolutely addicted to this site. I have such fun coming up with unique ideas of stories and items to post. By the way, it is now called Yahoo Voices
Gaining Page Views On Your Yahoo Voices Page
So one of your articles, stories, or poems has been published on Yahoo Voices. You earn money by getting at least 1000 page views on your content. So obviously, you want to get as many page views as possible of the articles you write.
The easiest way I know to gain page views is to advertise your article on social networks such as Twitter and Facebook.
What Is Twitter? (http://twitter.com/)
If you have not already done so, join Twitter. It’s easy and free to do. For those of you unfamiliar with Twitter, it is a Social Networking site that gives you the opportunity to answer the question, “What are you doing?” You answer the question using 140 characters (including spaces) or less. You can respond with a simple statement like “I enjoyed watching a movie with my husband.” You can use your response to plug a new Blog, a website, a YouTube video you enjoyed, and thousands of other possibilities. Most ideally, use your response to advertise your wonderful new content posted on your page of Yahoo Voices.
To Join Twitter
Sign up on this page: https://twitter.com/signup. You will give your first and last name. You need to choose a user name. This user name will be part of your URL.
For example, my name is Debbie Dunn. Since I am a professional storyteller, I want people to know my name. Therefore, my Twitter URL is http://twitter.com/debbiedunn
Some social networkers suggest that to help search engines such as Google find your name more easily, put an underscore symbol between your first and last name. So if I wished to plug my name, I could have had my user name be: debbie_dunn
Let’s say you wished to advertise your business instead. If you were a bike company called “Ben’s Bikes,” you might want to have your user name be bensbikes or bens_bikes or buy_bens_bikes. In that case, your Twitter URL would look like one of the following:
If you wish to keep yourself more anonymous on the web, you might instead want to choose a user name that both hides your identity and highlights a unique aspect of your personality. Let’s say that you loved waterfalls. Your user name could be waterfallseeker or waterfall_seeker. In that case, your Twitter URL would like one of these two options:
Choose a password. List your e-mail address to alert you when you have new followers or direct messages. After that, you can begin sharing your 140-characters or less messages. These messages are called Tweets.
What Is A Twitter Follower?
A Twitter follower is like your friend on Facebook or one of the other social networks. They can elect to follow you. You check out their page and decide if you wish to extend them the courtesy of following them back. If you are using Twitter to advertise your Blogs, Websites, products, or Yahoo Voices links, it is definitely to your benefit to get lots of followers.
Network Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/) With Twitter
Facebook is like a school yearbook on the web. You can fill your Facebook page with pictures, posts, notes, and connect with friends. It has been fun to have people I went to school with from years ago connect with me via Facebook. You can only see the Facebook pages of your Facebook friends. Once again, there are all kinds of guides of how to use Facebook; therefore, you can learn how to use Facebook from others.
You can set up your Twitter page and your Facebook page to network each other. My sister-in-law thought I was posting to my Facebook page all the time. Instead, I was simply posting at Tweet on Twitter. All my Tweets automatically show up on Facebook, my Blogs, and some of my other social networking sites like Plaxo. Therefore, you are getting more bang for your buck, so to speak, when you plug one of your Yahoo Voices articles on Twitter.
Finally, you have the option of setting up your Yahoo Voices articles to automatically be plugged on Twitter and Facebook and on your Blog. That way, you can plug your articles twice. A simpler version of your plug will be done for you automatically by Yahoo Voices. Then you can make the plug you post be even more specific to attract more traffic to your new story, article, or poem.
Tiny URL.com (http://tinyurl.com/)
The address or web link of your Yahoo Voices will have a very long URL that takes up a lot of room. For example, one of my Yahoo Voices articles is a 1-minute video called “Beach Review for Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.” The URL for that video is: http://voices.yahoo.com/video/beach-review-myrtle-beach-south-carolina-3525707.html?cat=16.
If I tried pasting that long URL into Twitter, that takes up 90 of my 140 allowable characters. That does not give you much room to say what you want to say about this link.
One of the easiest solutions is to open up Tiny URL.com. Paste that long URL into the field on that page. Click on the Make Tiny URL button. That long URL has now been assigned the following short URL: http://tinyurl.com/n5lamr8. That tiny URL only takes up 26 characters. Therefore, I have 114 characters left to say what I wish to say about this link. I am now ready to formulate my Tweet on Twitter.
How To Plug Your Yahoo Voices Articles On Twitter
Click on your article, story, or poem so that it either opens in a new tab or a new window.
In a new tab, have your Twitter page open.
In another new tab, have the TinyURL.com page open with the newly created short URL of your article content.
Typically, this is how I would plug my new video on Twitter:
Watch Video called Beach Review for Myrtle Beach, South Carolina on Associated Content at http://tinyurl.com/n5lamr8
That used 116 characters of my 140 characters possible. Therefore, I still have 24 characters I can use.
To help search engines find this Tweet faster and people interested in beach reviews, put the number sign immediately in front of the key words. People might be visiting sites like Google and running a search on beach reviews, Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, and Yahoo Voices. Therefore, I will put the number sign immediately in front of those key words. Additionally, I will add some additional search engine links such as ocean and seagulls. My Tweet now looks like this:
Watch Video called #Beach Review for #Myrtle Beach, #South Carolina on #Associated Content at http://tinyurl.com/n5lamr8, #ocean, #seagulls
I have 1 character to spare.
That Tweet will show up on Twitter, Facebook, my Blog, and several other of my social networks sites. Within a day or two, I find that I get severa
l clicks on that link. Naturally, this adds to the number of page views I receive on Yahoo Voices. This eventually helps me earn a little bit of income.
I hope this guide helps. Feel free to make comments below should you have comments, feedback, or questions.
