We all know corruption is like oxygen for some persons. They will innovate methods and techniques to circumvent the law. Ultimately the law fails and the man wins. Here is an interesting case.
James flew from Gulf to his home country and landed at the airport He had four boxes of goods brought from abroad including his personal luggage. The Jumbo flight carried about 400 passengers and there was a long queue at the customs counters. Four lines were formed to complete the customs formalities and duty assessment. One line was thin .It had very few persons waiting whereas the other three had long lines of passengers.
The reason for the long and short queue was ascertained. It was interesting to note that the official at the short queue strictly enforced baggage rules and asked searching questions. So passengers avoided going to him. The other lines had officials who were very liberal and who could be easily tipped and bought.
In the meanwhile one passenger inadvertently joined the short queue. An official called him and said ‘ join this line. It is short and clearance will be fast’. The passenger was puzzled and was in two minds.
A few minutes later, the official who faced the short line found he was not having work. He called passengers from the long lines to join his line. The passengers were scared. They felt they would be heckled and harassed. But they gave way and took position in the short line. James was one among them who obeyed this official. He went to him loaded with fear. But he found clearance was speedy in this line. His turn came in a few minutes.
The official asked James a straight question.” How many boxes do you have”?
James answered ” Four”
Official: Pay 100 dollars.
James: Sir, I don’t have 100 dollars with me.
Official: Doesn’t matter. How much do you have?
James: Sixty dollars.
Official: Yes. That is OK. I clear all baggage. I have marked all as checked. But pay the balance by borrowing from friends who have come to receive you. I will be in the Gent’s toilet.
James collected the amount from his friend and paid him in the toilet.
The honest official thus proved his real caliber.
James’ baggage was cleared and he went out.
On seeing him his friend asked” Who is the fellow with an elastic conscience?”
James: I don’t know except that people say he is said to be the most honest among officials in the customs. He collects 25 dollars per box.
