I remember the day when I heard the strange noise coming from my children’s bedroom. When I went in their bedroom, I was amazed to see my daughter Hannah’s pet hamster named “Soccer” trying to do the monkey bars at the top of his cage. I gathered everyone in my family to witness this amazing trick Soccer is doing. Soccer, the pet hamster was very determined and kept working at the monkey bars making it halfway through and falling. Soccer, the pet hamster kept repeating this process over and over again for hours. We noticed that Soccer’s favorite time to practice his monkey bars were around 7 p.m. at night. The whole family got a kick out of watching him every evening giving us some great entertainment.
My daughter Ashley decided she wanted to take a photo for her PTA Reflections contest at school. The theme was “Wow” and she ended up winning 1st place in the category for photography at her Elementary School. She named her photo “Monkey Bar Hamster”. We were very proud of her for winning 1st place and proud of our other daughter for allowing her to take the photo of her pet hamster.
Everyone has heard of dog agility. Dog agility is a dog sport which a person directs a dog through an obstacle course in a race for time as well as accuracy. Although hamster agility is not a common sport, you can still make a course for your hamster and enjoy the same sport as dog agility, but in a miniature hamster way.
You will need to get a large plastic box that the hamster can’t get out of and big enough to set up your agility course. You will also need to purchase your agility items for your pet hamster. The Gerbil Agility website is a great place to purchase agility equipment for your pet hamster. Some of these include bar jumps, play tunnels, fence jumps, tire jumps, weave polls, and equipment sets.
Why should you get an agility set for your hamster?
A hamster needs exercise everyday and it would be wonderful to give your hamster some other activity other than the wheel. This will also give you, your family and your pet hamster hours of entertainment. Offering your hamster agility equipment will help your pet hamster learn new skills using a combination of balance, coordination, speed, reflexes, strength, endurance, and stamina. You never know what trick your hamster will start doing once he has the practice. Look at our hamster, he has never had agility training and look what he can do!
Remember, taking care of your pet is very important and hamsters should be played with daily. They need love just like everybody else.
