A couple of weeks ago I purchased Ampro Pro Style protein styling gel, in Walgreen’s drugstore, for just 57 cents. I am not sure of the regular retail price, but I thought this was a bargain, I needed to try out.
The jar is black with a white top. The writing on the front and back of the jar is white, and very easy to read. I am always looking for good styling products, so hoped that this would be a winner for me. What I liked, when reading the jar, was that this product is non-greasy, will not flake, and is alcohol-free.
A couple of days later I washed my hair, used a conditioner, and partly towel dried my hair. I then opened the jar for he first time. The product is either a very dark brown, or black. With the inside of the jar being black, it makes the extra thick gel, look black. I put the jar close to my nose and didn’t like the smell at all. As I had read ‘Since 1947 the manufacturers of America’s #1 styling gel’, I figured the color and smell, was not going to put me off.
Well, I put the thick gel onto my finger tips and applied it to my hair. My hair lay flat to my head, so I couldn’t wait to dry it, and hope for a miracle. After blow-drying my hair, I looked in the mirror, and my hair, which is brown, gray, and highlighted, looked darker than normal. I finished styling my hair, and it was easy to manage. Therefore the gel worked great. The smell remained in my hair, until I actually smothered it in hairspray. That finally took away the horrible smell.
I figured that I needed to find out more about this product. Here is what they say on the website:
“For the past 50 years, Ampro has been the forerunner in African American hair care. Beginning with the original Ampro ProStyl Protein gel created in 1947 and growing into an extensive product line that includes shampoos, conditioners and salon products, Ampro always has your hair covered from root to tip.”
Now I know what I have done wrong. Ampro sell Protein Styling Gel -Clear Ice, which is for gray, blonde, and light colored hair. How stupid could I be. It doesn’t say anywhere on the jar that it is for dark hair. Now I know why my hair didn’t look it’s normal variety of shades.
“Use our ‘Clear Ice Protein Styling Gel’ to add body and sheen to gray, blond or light colored hair while providing a firm, yet natural feeling hold. This non-greasy, water based formula will not flake and is alcohol-free. Ideal for use with sculptured styles, roller sets, finger waves, locks, and twists.”
Well, I always put my hair in a French twist so I figured that it had worked for me.
For someone that has African American hair, this product will be great. For this grandmother/step great-grandmother, it is a product that I will not be using again. It is a shame because it does work. I just purchased the wrong product in this range.
