Autism is development disability that results from a neurological disorder. The neurological disorder affects the normal functioning of the brain that causes developmental areas in communication skills and development in social skills.
Autism usually affects children. Children who have this neurological disorder can be hard to diagnose.
Not all children diagnosed with this disorder will have the same level of autism. Each child will have different needs and issues.
When I worked at a major grocery store chain some years ago, the people I worked with and myself became fully aware of what autism is. A couple that shopped in our store had a son with autism.
The days when they came in to finish their walk, their son would manage to make it through the store with them just fine. It was the days they would need to do their shopping is when they would on occasion have a problem with him not being able to handle the entire shopping trip.
Their son was familiar enough with a few of the employees that he would be able to take a tour of the store, watch us in the bakery or take part of the shopping list with the aid of one of us he felt comfortable with and help with the shopping.
We didn’t mind helping them while they were in the store, because they were wonderful parents and customers.. Their son loved to take the tours and the likes even though he had done these before. He knew it could be part of his experience at the grocery store when he wasn’t up to doing the shopping with his parents. We learned quite about autism from him and his parents.
