Obesity has been an ongoing epidemic in the United States and big corporations are making their pockets fat at our expense! Everywhere you look you see commericals, ads and billboards raving over some new found miracle pill or diet that will help you to lose weight without doing anything! Wow, wouldn’t that be great if there was such a miracle pill, but there’s not!
Some diet pills may help you shed a few pounds quickly but it’s just that: a quick fix. You can’t live on the diet pills forever and if you don’t change your lifestyle habits you will find yourself in the same sinking overweight boat you were in in the first place as soon as you go off of the pills!
If you want to lose weight and keep it off the healthy way then the number one thing you must remember is that this isn’t just a “diet”, this is a lifestyle change! It’s your bad lifestyle habits that got you into this mess and you are going to have to change them to get you out of this mess!
I’m not claiming to be any sort of expert. I have been overweight for almost my entire life. I have tried every diet pill and fad diet out there only to lose a few pounds and then gain them back with a few extra thrown in. Yo-yo dieting is not healthy or good for your body. It puts more strain on your heart which none of us needs.
In January of this year I decided that this was MY year. My year to change myself mentally and physically and become the person that I want to be. I have done a lot of research online and by changing my lifestyle habits I have lost 27 lbs so far and I’m not seeing any signs of stopping!
The first thing to do is prepare yourself mentally. Decide if you are truely ready for this change. Are you ready to change your lifestyle and leave your old one behind? What is more important to you? Being thin and healthy or stuffing your face and being uncomfortable and unhealthy in your own body? I choose the first!
Make a list of things that motivate you to lose weight. Do you want to be healthy for your children? Do you want attention from the opposite sex? Do you want to be healthy for yourself? Do you want to be able to wear cute little clothes? The ideas are endless. Make a list of everything you want to do once you get to your goal weight and keep that list to read over every time you feel like you want to give up. Remind yourself that these things are more important to you than eating junk food!
You can do searches on the internet for all sorts of weight loss websites and forums. Talk with people who have lost weight, talk with people who are trying to lose weight. Soak in all of the knowledge and advice you find and put it to use on yourself. Diet fads work differently for everyone so pick something that you know you can stick with for the rest of your life and not something that will just be a quick fix!
The key to losing weight is to have a calorie deficit. Whatever weight you are, you have an amount of calories that you need to maintain that weight. The key is to find that number of calories and lower your calorie intake each day by anywhere from 500 – 1,000 calories. When you exercise you also burn calories and those calories burned also help add up. You lose 1 pound for every 3,500 calorie deficit so remember that every time you feel the need to binge and put more calories into your mouth that you don’t need!
One of the key ingredients for weight loss is drinking water! Water helps you to digest food better and makes your body run better so that you are able to metabolise fat better. There are so many benefits of drinking water and your body needs it!
If you are truely ready to lose weight and be healthy then do your research and find out what you think will work for you! Don’t worry about using diet pills or fad programs, just do what you know you can live with for the rest of your life. Start off by writing down everything you stick into your mouth every single day keeping track of the calories in everything you consume. This will help you to be more conscious about every bite you are putting into your mouth and it will be easy for you to stay around your target calorie range.
Don’t get frustrated if the weight loss comes. You didn’t become overweight over night and it’s not going to come off over night. The healthiest way to lose it is to take it slow and lose 2 lbs a week. Some weeks you may lose more, some weeks you may lose less, just don’t give up, you can do it and you can become the person you want to be!
