You have waited nine long months, and you have your nursery painted and well stocked. You feel you are completely ready for your new baby to arrive. But you still need to pack a bag for the big day. You get lots of advice and read lots of books, but is what they say really what you need? Did you get everything, and are you packed for unforeseen circumstances? Well, you really don’t know what to pack until you have been through labor and delivery, and if this is your first baby, you have no idea.
What you need to pack as far as clothing. First you will need a going home outfit. Depending on the weather and location you are in, sleep/lounging pants or shorts and a t-shirt is always a good safe bet and will not take up much space in your bag. You will want to take a pair of pajamas or a sleep shirt. If you have a “natural” vaginal birth you will most likely use the gown provided due to frequent checks, but a sleep shirt may be more comfortable. If you have a cesarean you may opt to wear sleep pants or other sleep wear. Bring socks, slippers, pair of flip flops or another type of shoe to wear while in the hospital. They encourage you to walk around and you don’t want to walk around bare foot. Bring a change of underwear. You can always wear the ones the hospital provides, that is highly recommended while in the hospital, but for on the way home I would choose my own. Also, don’t forget a change of clothes and sleep clothes for your spouse. You may be spending a lot of time in the hospital and he needs clean clothes too.
You will need all toiletries such as shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste, toothbrush, hairbrush, deodorant, etc. Bring a few pillows, one for you and one for your spouse. Make sure they are in different pillowcases other than white. If you are breastfeeding, bring a feeding pillow. As far as items needed for your recovery, the hospital will provide you with all sanitary items, medications, and healing items such as a heating pad, ice packs and such. The hospital will also provide everything needed for your baby, diapers, wipes, formula if formula feeding, bottles, pacifiers, bottles, blankets and clothes. But, you will need a going home out for your new baby.
You may spend a lot of time in the hospital during labor and delivery and recovery. Magazines, books, radio, mp3 player, or other form of entertainment is a must. Camera and video camera are a definite must bring. The hospital will send you home with the items you and your baby used while in the hospital. So you do not need to bring any extras and remember to make some extra room. Also, you will have an extra person coming home with you so pack light and only what is needed. You don’t want to be bombarded with suitcases and bags. You will have your new baby and any gifts brought to your room from family and friends.
