Granola is a great choice for a healthy breakfast in the morning, or even for an afternoon snack. Two brands of granola available on the market today are Back to Nature’s Cranberry Pecan Granola and Giant’s Oats, Honey and Raisins Granola. Which is the better selection?
Granola is an enjoyable breakfast option, especially with milk added. This makes a very healthy breakfast, especially because of oats and wheats in most granolas. You don’t have to fix a whole breakfast, such as bacon, eggs and toast, but you can sit down and enjoy a bowl of granola with milk. There are many different brands of granola, and many different specific granola blends. Here is a comparison of two brands/types of granola…
Back To Nature Cranberry Pecan Granola.
This is your gourmet granola. You will pay almost twice as much for this granola as for the store brand of granola or even a regular name-brand. The Back To Nature Granolas are top of the line. The price is about $4 at least per box, and you generally can’t find it somewhere like WalMart. I have found it at Martin’s Food Stores in Hagerstown, MD.
The Back To Nature Granolas have no artificial preservatives, flavors or colors. They are made with 100% grain. They are also low in sodium. The whole wheat consists of whole grain rolled oats and whole wheat flakes. The Cranberry Pecan flavor has dried cranberries in it, and actual pieces of pecans! To me, this is really healthy, with the added fruit and nut! I particularly like the Cranberry Pecan flavor, because it gives it an exotic taste, unlike your normal granola with dates and raisins. It has an added zing, and burst of flavor with the dried cranberries!
As for the nutritional value, you will get 4 grams of protein in each 1/2 cup serving, as well as 4 grams of dietary fiber. There are only 12 grams of sugar, which is highly acceptable. One serving has 200 calories. As for vitamins, the Cranberry Pecan granola has 15% of Thiamin and 15% of Iron, 6% of Vitmain B6, Roboflavin and Folic Acid, 4% of Vitamin A, and 2% of Calcium of the percent daily values for a 2000 calorie diet.
Back to Nature also has other flavors of the gourmet granola. You can get Apple Blueberry, French Vanilla, and Apple Strawberry, as some examples. Each has all natural ingredients. They also have a standard classic type of granola and one with raisins. All of them are palate-pleasers, and you can choose the one for you based on your personal preferences and tastes. I happen to like the Cranberry Pecan the best.
Giant Oats, Honey and Raisins Granola
This is your standard granola. You get the oats and raisins, like you would expect in a traditional granola. I like the added honey flavor- it gives it a sweet taste without adding too much sugar. I really enjoy the raisins- you can never get enough raisins. Although the taste is the standard for granolas, it is still quite delicious. I like granolas in general because of their health content and the taste, as compared to other types of cereals like brans.
As for the Oats, Honey and Raisin nutritional content, each serving of 1/2 cup has 220 calories. This is slightly more than the Cranberry Pecan Granola, but not a significant difference. There are 13 grams of sugar, which is a tiny bit more, but not much. Four grams of fiber are found, the same as with the Cranberry Pecan. As for Vitamin content, you get 8% of Iron, Thiamin, Riboflavin and Zinc, and 4% of Niacin and Calcium. Additionally, you will find 20% of phosphorus, and 10% of magnesium and copper. These are based on the recommended daily allowance for a 2000 calorie diet. This gives you a bit more mineral content than the Cranberry Pecan granola, but a bit less percent wise of vitamin content.
I can’t really choose one or the other of these, because they both have unique flavors and tastes. The Giant brand is certainly less expensive if you are watching your budget. But I like the Cranberry Pecan granola for its unique, different taste. Both granolas provide similar nutritional content and calories, and both are delicious! I could eat these granolas every morning and be completely satisfied!
