Within Temptation is one of the most elite indie music bands in the world and one of the best acts to come from the Netherlands. I discovered this band, when I heard one of their songs used on a commercial to promote a movie. I find Within Temptation to be one of the most elemental, yet universal bands in the symphonic metal and gothic persuasion. They have managed to cross into several genres, without losing their primary edge and individual appeal. What makes them so interesting to me is the fact they can be very light, yet angelic and innocent, but they can also be dark, yet deep and guilty. As a gothic metal band, they are slowly attempting to mark their way into mainstream media. Within Temptation is has remained extensively true to their roots and manages to be aware of their place in the music industry. They have managed to bring something new to the industry that is exciting, yet beautiful. Something authentic and original, without flip flopping over their element. Something great. The band consists of Sharon Den Adel, Ruud Adrianus Jolie, Jeroen van Veen, Stephen van Haestregt, Martijn Spierenburg, and Robert Westerholt.
Sharon Den Adel has been praised as being the ultimate female singer of Within Temptation. Not only is she gifted vocally, she also has a hand at writing several songs. With Sharon’s natural angelic and beautiful voice, she used her vocals to her advantage, by collaborating them into the gothic rock and symphonic metal persuasion. Sharon Den Adel is known for her unique voice and presence, as well as, artistic style and stunning looks. I find her appeal to be strikingly massive because despite their collaboration and overall experimenting with music, Sharon has remained true to her edge. She clearly knows who she is as a singer and as an artist. Sharon is huge benefit to Within Temptation on quite a few wavelengths, as she not only stunning, but possesses a presence that triumphs most female front woman to date.
Within Temptation has quite a few amazing CDs, however; my favorite CD is without question “The Silent Force”, as it is what made me interested in them. It’s music is more mainstream, yet unique and original to the extent, there is no choice for it not to be accepted. I always love to appreciate music that is innovative, yet elite and The Silent Force was all of that. The songs on The Silent Voice are so multi-genre and flexible. Although, it’s been stated that Enter and Mother Earth have been an extensive contribution to Within Temptations success, it has not set the standard for the music Within Temptation produces. I appreciate The Silent Force for it’s creativity and the fact it has set the standard for not just their music, but music in the symphonic metal genre. The CD has managed to project on it’s audience and that is what sells. The band is known for having rather average production, hence why their performances are never less than fantastic. Some critics and theorists believe their production is similar to bands such as Nightwish and Lacuna Coil, hence their production could be the primary reason that is holding them back from mainstream. Some of my favorite Within Temptation songs include: Stand My Ground, The Swan Song, Our Farewell, Memories, A Dangerous Mind, The Promise, What Have You Done, Pearls of Light, Enter, Angels, Pale, and more.
Within Temptation is so gifted, they have made music in a class and league of it’s own. As Within Temptation is not known in the United States, there are rumors circulating that there is going to be a tour with bands Lacuna Coil and The Gathering throughout the United States sometime in May of 2007. Although, Within Temptation is so diverse and universal, they are often compared to bands such as Nightwish, Evanescence, Lacuna Coil, Theater of Tragedy, and The Gathering.
