There are many “theatre district” restaurants but true theatre restaurants have one thing in common; (closed on Monday) Basilica (676 9th Ave 46th & 47th St. 212-489-0051/212-489-0078) is an authentic Italian place in the heart of Hell’s Kitchen which offers many great delivery options for doormen and house managers all across the Great White Way. There are also many off and off-off Broadway venues who work well past dinner and aren’t able to escape the throngs of a tech rehearsal that’s gone on too long, but still want to have a substantial dinner that doesn’t come in shrink wrap. Basilica is one of the many outlets available which can serve this need and does so nightly (except Mondays) as delivery is available from 3:30-11:30.
Their delivery menu is comprehensive though it should be noted that early birds ordering delivery can’t take advantage of the Pre-Theatre Specials. However if money is no object there is a wide and hearty menu that’s available for delivery. I’ve spent numerous nights sitting at the stage door of the Al Hirschfeld Theatre with nothing to do and Basilica has been there for me on more than one occasion.
Basilica has a number of chicken entrees including old favorites like Chicken Parmigiana which is served with spaghetti but you should try their Chicken Romana; it’s excellent! A tender Basilica chicken breast that’s served with your choice of pasta and is draped in garlic rosemary white wine sauce is truly a dream. If your appetite’s anything like mine you could be back on the phone to Basilica for a second serving before you remember you already ate!
You can also compliment your main course with any of the Basilica salad options, soups, or their antipasti selections like arugula with shaved parmesan or their bruschetta which is garlic toast, diced tomato & mozzarella in olive oil. However it’s the Basilica bruschetta, served with these lush onions which ended up taking the cake for me. My wife has never forgiven me or my breath for my decision to implement onions into my regular diet but now I’m ordering onions left and right; Basilica onions to boot!
If you’re looking for something a little lighter Basilica also has homemade pastas in different sauces as well as a selection of imported pastas. While this may set you a little bit under the required minimum for delivery ($15) you can always get some garlic bread or any of their homemade desserts to complete your delicious Basilica meal and not interrupt your tech rehearsals.
