The Harry Potter series of books by J.K. Rowling has been a source of inspiration and entertainment for a decade for readers of all ages. They have also introduced a whole new vocabulary of words which seem to have become commonplace all over the world. This is quite a feat, since a decade ago if someone had said the word Muggle no one would have had a clue what that was. Kneazles, Death Eaters, Purebloods – all these words are now part of our vocabulary thanks to Mrs. Rowling.
As the seventh book approaches, parties are being planned and readers will try to make Pumpkin Pasties, Cauldron Cakes and Butterbeer on their own. There are several places on the Internet where you can find some successful recipes, http://www.britta.com/hogwarts/recipes.html being one of them. Those readers who are very adventurous might go out and buy some of those Bertie Bott’s Every Flavor Beans.
In the books, Ron Weasley says “When they say every flavor, they mean every flavor…”(Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, Chapter 6) Fortunately for us, Jelly Belly, who makes the Bertie Bott’s Every Flavor beans, has not taken the books quite so literally. Unfortunately for us, they have included several of the most vile tasting flavors that Bertie Bott’s boasts.
I remember the first and only time I tried these. It was when I was new to the Harry Potter fandom and we were visiting my future sister in law’s family. Her cousin had a pack and the flavor I tried was vomit. Now, being a person who has a lot of experience with the real taste of vomit, since I have a problem with motion sickness, I didn’t think that anything could taste as bad as the real thing. I was wrong.
The jelly bean which sported the flavor vomit tasted exactly like vomit, and I’m not sure I want to know how they achieved that, to be honest. I am a huge fan of the Jelly Belly jelly beans because they taste exactly like what they are supposed to taste like. That should have been my first clue that I was taking a risk.
Would I take the risk again? Possibly, but only after checking to make certain that I did not choose a vomit flavored one.
If you are an adventurous person and if you have a strong stomach, by all means get yourself a box of Bertie Bott’s Every Flavor Beans, available for purchase at jellybelly.com. But if you, like me, have a queasy stomach, I’d think twice. Especially if you are related to someone who might have a bit of Fred and George Weasley in them.
