The new season of NBC’s reality show hit The Biggest Loser got off on the right foot Tuesday night. The 2-hour season premiere introduces us to a new crop of fitness-starved contestants. A new addition to the show this season is Allison Sweeney as the host. She stars as Sami Brady on NBC’s longtime daytime soap The Days of Our Lives. Sweeney replaced comedian Caroline Rhea who had hosted the past 3 seasons.
This season’s contestant’s first challenge was a desert run. The 2 trainers of the show arrived by plane and the 18 contestants had to run across the desert. The first 2 to meet the judges on the other side of the desert would be the team captains. The team captains then were allowed to pick 5 members to be on their team. The 6 remaining members who were not picked for either the red or the black team were sent home. Or that’s what they wanted the contestants to think. Former Biggest Loser trainer Jillian, as the Black team, is actually training those 6 contestants. The Red and the Blue teams no nothing of the Black teams existence.
The Red and Blue teams then headed for weigh – in with their trainers Bob (blue team) and Kim (Red Team) sitting in.
After the weigh-in the workouts began. Slow and painful seemed to be the workout speed for the majority of both groups as everyone adjusted to the exercise. Following that both teams headed to the kitchen for a healthy eating lesson. As a strange twist each team was blindfolded and led into the room to each face a cart full of food. It represented the amount of food they consume in a weeks time. You could tell the visual was very “real” for some people.
The first challenge involved more airplanes; this time grounded ones full of luggage. Each team would have to pull the airplane filled with the amount of weight they wanted to loose. The red team prevailed and was rewarded with letters from home.
The teams hit the gyms one more time before the weigh in and first elimination. The Red team lost a total of 87 pounds, losing to the blue team with an awesome weight loss of 109 pounds. Jerry from the blue team made history for the biggest one-week weight loss with his 31 pounds. He is also the oldest team member ever at age 62.
The loss at the weigh in means the red team had to eliminate a member. Amber was voted off, which was not surprising as she needed help with the desert race and expressed a couple times that she wished to go home.
All along the black team is still training under Jillian’s guidance and is planning for a surprise later this season back at the Biggest Loser campus. It should be interesting to see how the Black team will later come into play in the competition.
