Borders Group, Inc. is offering its more than 30,000 employees nationwide the chance to become a published author under the company’s exclusive and proprietary publishing program, according to a press release issued through PR Newswire. Borders Group will hold a fiction writing contest open to all employees in Borders and Waldenbooks stores, as well as employees of the distribution centers and the company’s corporate office.
Employee authors are eligible to submit manuscripts appealing to readers in any of the fiction categories. At least one employee whose title is chosen as the winner by a panel of judges at the corporate office will be awarded a book deal including the full support of Borders merchandising and marketing team. This includes being featured in the Borders “Shortlist,” an e-mail promotion for Borders Rewards members; there are currently over 19.5 million Borders Rewards members. Employees will have until January 31, 2008 to submit manuscripts.
“Our employees are talented and creative individuals who have a tremendous passion for books, and we believe that there are many who also have undiscovered writing talent,” Rob Gruen, executive vice president of merchandising and marketing for Borders Group, Inc., said in the press release. “We are excited to discover new authors within our company and to promote their novels to the millions of loyal customers who rely on our recommendations. We have such confidence in the talents of our staff that we are anticipating multiple winners and hope to publish fictional works ranging from mysteries and thrillers to romance and historical novels.”
The first Borders’ exclusive and proprietary novel, “Slip & Fall” by Nick Santora, was released in June 2007. The book has reached bestseller lists at “The Wall Street Journal” and “The Boston Globe,” and was named as a top summer read by “USA Today.” Future titles under Borders’ exclusive and proprietary publishing program include a book commemorating the 50th anniversary of the GRAMMY Awards and a John Legend Tour book.
Borders has also been involved in discovering new authors outside the company. Earlier this year, Borders co-sponsored the “First Chapters” competition on the writing website Gather.com, in which a book deal was awarded to the entrant judged to have submitted the best first three chapters of an unpublished novel. Borders reported plans to participate in the contest in the future as well.
The Borders Employee Author program demonstrates a commitment on the part of Borders Group to be more than just a seller of books and other entertainment. Like great booksellers of past centuries, Borders is seeking ways to produce the very books it sells.
