Nelson Chiropractic and Pilates Center of Atco, NJ joins more than 200 Pilates studios around the world in an event sponsored by Shape Magazine, called Pilates for Pink. P4P is raising funds for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF) throughout the month of October. Nelson’s event will take place on Saturday, October 20th.
“We decided to participate in the Pilates for Pink campaign because of the many students who practice Pilates at our studio who are breast cancer survivors,” says studio owner Kerri Nelson, who is also a Doctor of Chiropratic. This event is a great way to increase awareness and let the public know how many women have conquered breast cancer and used Pilates to reclaim their strength, flexibility, self image, and confidence. Plus, this event gives students an easy and fun way to contribute to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation and help make a difference.
Pilates is an innovative exercise system aimed at developing core control, according to Nelson. The exercises are designed to accommodate any level of fitness and they are truly results-driven. “I introduced every one of my patients to the the proper way of breathing and organizing their bodies in movement” using the Polestar Pilates system. Before she knew it, patients were hooked and wanted more once their care plans had ended. Nelson opened the first professional Pilates studio in South Jersey to offer rehabilitative Pilates in a group or private environment.
As part of the Pilates for Pink campaign, Shape magazine is also sponsoring a large-scale Pilates for Pink event on October 7th, in Union Square Park, New York City. Six classes will be held throughout the day, beginning at 10:15am and ending with the last class at 5pm. Sign up online for these classes, as space is limited.
Three Top facts about breast cancer, according to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation:
Women are at a higher risk for breast cancer if they have a personal or family history of the disease; women are at a higher risk if they are obese, especially after menopause; today, 97% of women diagnosed with breast cancer at an early stage survive more than 5 years.
The public is invited to participate in a Pilates mat class to benefit the Breast Cancer Research Foundation on Saturday, October 20th at 9am.at Nelson Chiropratic. The requested donation for each class is $10, with all proceeds going to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. Additional donations to the cause are encouraged. The classes are appropraite for all levels of fitness and will focus on relaxing the shoulders, opening the chest and gaining mobility in the upper back.
“These are the areas where students who have undergone radiation and chemotherapy treatments tend to need the most attention,” says Nelson, “and they are the number one area where most of us hold stress and tension from poor daily postures.”
“Forward head carriage, rounded shoulders, and slumped low back position leads to shoulder pain and tension, neck stiffness, headaches and many other upper body complaints. What better place to work on these things than during a fun, rehabilitative Pilates class that feels great” and benefits the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.
