The Broken Saddle Riding Company, located in beautiful Cerrillos NM (approximately half an hour outside of Santa Fe), provides an unparalleled riding experience for Santa Fe residents and visitors alike. Locally owned and operated, Broken Saddles operates year round and has a wide variety of riding options.
Contributing greatly to the atmosphere of the experience is the surrounding town of Cerrillos. An easy and lovely half hour drive from nearby Santa Fe, Cerrillos was a mining boom town in the 1870s. Driving around the sleepy streets, pausing for dogs and other traffic, one is quickly transported back into the 19th century thanks to the historic store fronts and old west feel. Broken Saddle is located on the edge of this small, picturesque town, at the end of a dusty trail.
Broken Saddle is able to accommodate riders of all experience levels, and has rides of varying length. Employees advise that less experienced riders select shorter rides because of the potential of soreness, and private rides are also available. Helmets are optional, though certainly suggested particularly for children and beginning riders.
The employees of Broken Saddle take great care to ensure the comfort of their riders by hand selecting horses for each person. Employees know each horse and its personality intimately and are quick to discern which horse is right for each rider. The horses are all docile, sweet, and well controlled and it was a pleasure to feel as though the horse knew precisely how to handle riders of all skill levels.
Rides themselves vary in route, but all go through the National Park which borders Cerrillos. It is a beautiful, scenic ride, particularly at sunset which casts wonderful colors and shadows over the desert. The horses wander on the sandy trails, allowing plenty of time to observe animals (squirrels, mainly) and cactus, both living and dried. It is worth noting that it is against the law to remove items from the National Park. However, a store in Cerrillos has all the dried cactus and other souvenirs one could desire.
After the ride is over, employees are more than willing to offer advice on food and lodging as well as entertainment choices in the area. Incredible hospitality seems to be a common thread in Cerrillos, and everyone is accommodating and friendly which adds further to the overall experience.
Truly, no trip to Santa Fe could ever be complete without a sunset stroll on horseback through the desert. The unique perspective offered to you as you sit seven feet in the cool, still air surrounded by sand and solitude is truly one you will never forget.
