Thursday August 9th, my daughter and I headed to the Ross County Fairgrounds in Chillicothe, Ohio. We were going to see Bucky Covington in concert. He was scheduled to headline a show at the fairgrounds to benefit Rock for Tots, a children’s charity that supports 25 children’s organizations throughout southern Ohio. I also had 4 meet and greet passes to meet Bucky before the show.
Now I will be honest when Season Five of American Idol was on, I was not a fan of Bucky Covington at all. However, when I heard “A Different World” the single off of Bucky’s debut CD titled “Bucky Covington” I loved it. Then I was given the opportunity to interview Bucky via phone. He was very nice during the interview and it did not even seem like an interview. I felt like I was just talking with him about his career. Bucky’s personality won me over even more and when I purchased the CD and listened to it, I loved it. During the interview Bucky said if I was to attend a show to be sure and meet him.
When I found out Bucky was going to be at the fair, I contacted the woman who set up the interview and asked for meet and greet passes. I ended up with 4 meet and greet passes. The day of the concert the weather report said we were gong to get lots of rain and lighting. I was not about to let this stop me from going to the show. In Ohio the weather changes all the time, just because they are saying a storm is coming does not mean it will.
I left the house at 5 P.M and the sky was still clear and it was hot and humid. We arrived at the fair and I let my daughter ride a few rides and we went to see the 4-H animals. Finally around 6:30 we went to the concert area. We were seated in the 2nd row. I looked around for the guy who was going to let me know where to go for the meet and greet. He told me where to be and what time. I had met a woman and her son who did not have meet and greet passes and since I had 2 extra, because my husband and son were not able to go, I told her they could come with us when it was time. Around 7:30 the sky started clouding over and the winds were picking up. A little before 8:00 Jonalee White took the stage and my daughter and I, and the woman and her son that I invited to go with us headed to where we told to be.
We saw Bucky standing by the bus and he looked over and smiled and waved. We guessed he was about to come over. Then they told everyone a huge storm with dangerous lighting was about to hit and for everyone to head to the bleachers in the grandstand. Before we even made it there the rain and lighting was pouring down on us. The wind was blowing so hard it was blowing right on top of us in the grandstand. A few minutes later it calmed down and we all went back and took our seats again.
Someone then announced that because of the storm much of the equipment onstage was damaged from the heavy rains. The concert was not going to happen. They told us that Bucky would come up into the grandstand for those who wanted to stay and sign autographs.
There were hundreds of people waiting up in the grandstand for Bucky. When Bucky started walking up the steps to the grandstand the crowd went crazy. Bucky did more than sign autographs; Bucky, with his guitar, his twin brother Rocky and another guy with a guitar entertained the fans with an acoustic set. At first it was hard to hear because Bucky did not even have a microphone and the crowd was so excited that he was so close they were screaming “We love you Bucky” and such, drowning him out some. Then they got a mic working and a couple songs were able to be heard a lot better.
Bucky sang and interacted with the crowd. The fans sang along to some the songs. Pictures were being taken from every angle. Bucky was full of smiles even thanking the fans that stayed through the rain and lighting just to hear him.
Many people have asked if I was disappointed that a typical concert did not happen and that I did not get my meet and greet. The answer with out any hesitation is, no, I am not a bit disappointed. I mean Yes I would have loved to have met Bucky , however when attending a outdoor concert I think everyone should be prepared that things may not go as planned. We do not know what will happen from one minute to the next when it comes to Mother Nature. Bucky done the very best that he could under the circumstances to entertain his fans. How many times do you get to be up close and listen to a musician that you enjoy hearing just sing with a wonderful voice and hear their raw talent shine through? This was my first Bucky Covington concert and no matter how many in the future I attend, this will be one that forever stays in my mind. Bucky showed how much he cared to please his fans. I am sure many artists would have simply left when the concert was canceled. Bucky did not do this; he got right in there with his fans and gave it his all. He is a class act.
Have I given up on meeting Bucky and enjoying the full concert experience? No way! Bucky will be Dayton, Ohio this Saturday for a festival and I plan to be there. Maybe I will get to meet Bucky this time, maybe I won’t but either way I know Bucky Covington cares enough to try and please his fans no matter what.
I have a short video of one of the songs Bucky sang during the acoustic set. I hope you enjoy it.
