The film is based on Jodi Picoult’s novel “My Sister’s Keeper”. The book tells the story of a family in crisis. Kate Fitzgerald has had acute promyelocytic leukemia since she was a toddler. Sarah and Brian Fitzgerald, Kate’s parents decide to conceive another child, Anna, who will act as a donor for her sister. Anna was made to be an exact genetic match to her sister.
The film begins when Kate is thirteen years old and she is sick, yet again. This time her parents want Anna to donate a kidney to her sister so that she may continue to live. Anna decides to hire a lawyer, Campbell Alexander, and to sue her parents for emancipation and the right to make all of her own medical decisions.
My Sister’s Keeper depicts Kate, Anna, and Jesse’s (the oldest child in the Fitzgerald family) struggle with Kate’s illness. It also depicts Sarah’s struggle, as she represents herself as a former lawyer in the court of law, to fight for Anna’s kidney for Kate. Finally, the film shows the dynamics of the relationship between Campbell Alexander and Anna’s guardian ad litem, Julia Romano.
Another of Jodi Picoult’s novels, “Plain Truth” was made into a Lifetime TV movie, which debuted in 2004 about the investigation surrounding the murder of an infant on an Amish farm.
