Now that summer is here there are so many great ideas for family getaways. If you’re looking for something family friendly and cost effective than a camping trip might be just the right thing. There are various campground sites in both New Jersey and New York that allow for an affordable weekend getaway. The kids can enjoy this type of vacation as well because of the pools, hiking, jungle gyms and hiking trails. Kids can explore the outdoors all in the confines of the campgrounds and under the watchful eyes of campground security.
One campground in particular stands out, it’s one I’ve been to quite a few times over a four year span and I’ve always found it clean, affordable, and fun. Kittatinny Campgrounds in Barryville New York family owned and operated for 67 years offers quality camp sites with various activities that both you and your children can do either alone or together.
Kittatinny Northeast Campsites offer 350 campsites both in beautiful wooded and open grass settings. There is a beautiful and peaceful trout stream, winding through the forest of Hemlock and Oak. There is brook-side camping in addition to the open, grass covered sites bordering the Delaware River. I’ve only ever stayed at the stream campsites which are very secluded and good if you’re looking for a more peaceful stay without being right on top of other campers.
River Beach Campground is located right on the Delaware River; it consists of over 160 sites built on 18 acres of wooded grounds. It caters to both tent and recreational vehicles and provides guests with river trips, river islands to explore, waterfront camping, 2 superior, modern bathhouses, an arcade, laundromat, and a camp store. The retail store is located on the campgrounds carries a variety of basic camping needs as well as a showroom of their exceptional retail line of new canoes and kayaks. Campsites will accommodate 4-12 people per site, you can choose between prime tent sites (riverfront or cummings creek), or if you prefer wooded areas set back from the river or a short walk to the river. All campsites come with a fire ring and picnic table. Don’t worry if you feel like being around civilization there are historic sites, fine restaurants, outside coffee cafe’s, antique stores, art gallerys, quaint country stores, nature trails and some of the most beautiful waterfalls.
They offer adventures such as Canoeing, Kayaking, Rafting, Tubing, Paintball, Camping and Hiking.
The Rafting trips are done down the Delaware River, each raft fits 5 people comfortably with mild rapids, you can choose the length of your trip up to 4.5 hours. Four different trips are offered, Ten Mile River to Barryville (4hrs), Barryville to Pond Eddy (3.5hrs), Pond Eddy to Matamoras (4.5hrs) and Staircase Base to Matamoras (3hrs). Rates for these trips range by the number of your party and the day of the week. The range is from $33.00-$62.00 with Super Saver Specials. Canoeing, Kayaking and Tubing have different rates and trip lengths. All seven bases are strategically located to insure the most diverse river trips. No experience is necessary for the white water rafting, kayaking, canoeing or tubing trips.

Whether you are a skilled outdoorsmen or someone looking to get acquainted with the great outdoors this is a great idea for you. Families want to spend more time together and these days with the pressures on kids and teens it’s essential that children learn the value of family and preserving their environment. There’s so much to learn and view in the great outdoors that children will gain so much from a long weekend away. Kittatinny operates on the Delaware River running through two National Parks. There is an abundance of wildlife such as the Bald Eagle, Osprey, Blue Heron and much more. You paddle through crystal clear water with amazing rock formations and large mountains.
While beach vacations can cost you a bundle on renting a house or staying at a hotel plus meals and activities you can be paying well over a $1000.00 for a weeks stay. At Kittatinny you’ll be paying roughly $10.00 a night per person plus any activities you might want to engage in. You can spend nights cooking on their fire pit whether it’s hamburgers or filet mignon it’s all possible when you’re camping! Make sure to bring a football, softball, or any other special activity because there’s plenty of room to play and hang out. Each site is built for a group of people so whether you’re 4 or 15 everyone will have more than enough room to move around comfortably. Are you worried about not having a bathroom? Well don’t worry because there are always bathrooms just a walk away with showers and dryers all cleaned daily and kept stocked with paper and products.
Money means everything to families these days and this is just one example of an affordable and fun getaway for everyone to enjoy. If you’ve never been camping I say give it a chance you might find it’s worth the trip and you may actually find you become one with nature.
