Desoto Falls Campground is located in northern Georgia in the large Chattahoochee National Forest. Desoto is one of many campgrounds in this area of the National Forest, but is one of nicest and has an interesting story to tell as well. Desoto Falls takes its name from a piece of armor found in the area that was reportedly left by the explorer Hernando de Soto on his expeditions into the area.
Desoto Falls Campground offers over 20 camping sites to the traveler looking for a place to get away from it all. The sites are situated along two loops that lie near to a creek in a picturesque wooded area of the forest. The creek provides a pleasant background noise to aid in your relaxing stay. The camping sites at Desoto Falls Campground are very large and quite private. A campground host is on site to answer any questions and also provides a measure of security and assures that campground rules are obeyed. Desoto Falls Campground offers both flush toilets and hot showers which is an improvement over many National Forest campgrounds which are generally quite primitive. Trout fishing in the nearby creek and other waters is a popular recreation in the area.
Desoto Falls Campground is located near to its namesake, Desoto Falls. There are actually two sets of falls, an upper falls that is about 90 feet high (with a number of small waterfalls making this drop) and a lower falls that is about 25 feet high. Nearby also is Blood Mountain which is the highest point along the Appalachian Trail in Georgia. Numerous opportunities for fishing, hiking, and other recreational pursuits are located near to Desoto Falls Campground.
One of the more interesting local sites is the city of Dahlonega, GA. Dahlonega was the epicenter of an eastern Gold Rush in the 1830’s. The old Dahlonega Courthouse now holds a museum dedicated to this area’s role in the gold history of America. A US Mint branch existed here from 1838 through the Civil War. Coins minted here are on display as well as gold nuggets and other interesting relics from this period. Gold panning is a popular recreational activity in the area and many businesses cater to tourists in search of gold. Other sites of interest in the area include Dockery Lake, Lake Lanier, and numerous mountain peaks and scenic areas.
