According to a report on cnn.com, there are over 18 million cargo carriers in use the world wide. Many of these carriers are sitting on docks in port. Many will remain there never to be used again. Enter David Cross. Cross was a member of the Merchant Marines for a number of years. He had first hand experience in using cargo shipping carriers. He felt that many of these cargo shipping containers could be put to good use. Cross felt that a container would make a good home because of its size and its durability to the ocean environment. It’s ideal for home construction. He and co-founder Steve Armstrong founded SG Blocks. SG Blocks uses cargo containers in new home construction.
Magoline Hazelton lives in South Carolina. She is known as the “house lady” by her friends. Hazelton has a house that is constructed out of these cargo carriers. If you look at her house from the outside, you wouldn’t even know that her home was made from cargo shipping containers. In 2003 Cross and Armstrong, an engineer, built Hazelton’s house.
The CNN article goes on to explain that it takes 9000 kilowatt hours to melt down a carrier for other use. That same amount of energy would burn a 70 kilowatt light bulb for 15 years. That equals a 95 percent footprint reduction, in energy wasted. That doesn’t even figure in the savings in lumber and trees used for framing.
The cost of a cargo home is about the same as a regular house. However, there is no concern about water damage or termite infestation. They weigh about 9,000 pounds. A cargo carrier can hold up to 60,000 pounds of weight. This is more than enough for any home.
The average home takes 4 to 8 months of construction. A cargo carrier home takes about 4 months to construct.
If you decide to build a larger home, the cost drops by about 15 percent per room. This is because of less material and construction expense in labor.
Cargo carriers have already been put to use by many construction companies. They are used for offices, temporary homes, military barracks, and dorms. The savings are enormous for these companies.
Amsterdam is one of the largest users of cargo carriers. They have a structure that houses about 1,000 students.
Armstrong insists that they can do anything with these carriers, when it comes to construction. They can be lined with brick, siding, and even placed underground.
A traditional roof is placed on top. this is needed because in some cases, several carriers are used. It also gives the building a better appearance of a home.
The use of a cargo carrier as a home is saving on other materials and energy that is necessary in building a house. They are solid and cost effective. They also free up the ports of cluttered cargo shipping carriers.
