According to the AFP, the Chinese government is cracking down on the officers that protect their streets everyday. The Communist government wants Chinese police officers to appear tougher and less arrogant.
No longer will the Chinese police be allowed to have oddly-dyed hair, wear jewelry, or smoke while on duty. Male police officers will not be allowed to grow facial hair, and female police officers will not be allowed to paint their nails.
Along with these restrictions, female police officers will have new restrictions on the heights of their heals, and the length of their hair. Hair that is longer then shoulder length will no longer be allowed. Shaved heads will also no longer be allowed.
There were many reports in China that the police officers were becoming very arrogant and this upset the Chinese government. There were also many reports of officers drinking while on duty or going to clubs. These actions will no longer be allowed.
In the future, Chinese police officers who commit minor offenses in these rules will be dealt with by having a strict conversation with their commanding officer. Repeat offenders will lose their jobs.
The goal of the Chinese government is to make sure that the officers gain the amount of respect that is required for the position. The goal is to make the police officers appear stricter, and more inline with their paid jobs.
One of the goals of some Communist nations has been to have a police force that is feared by the population. In the past, the Chinese government has made this a goal.
Many people will remember the events of 1989 in Tiananmen Square in China. There were protests that were being led mostly by students in protest of the People’s Republic of China. The police led the military into the area to try to stop the protests.
What resulted were the deaths and beatings of the students and widespread arrests for anyone who sympathized with the plight of the protestors. Videos and pictures of the attack by the police and the military are still seen widely today.
The reminders of this attack are still prevalent in China where many of the police officers still consider that as a great victory for the government. There are many people in China that still fear the police for this, and other occurrences.
While these changes in the police might appear to be a simple way of controlling the actions of the officers, it must be remember that the goal of the police officers is to control the population. In China, the police are sometimes allowed to control people by any means necessary.
