One of the things I love most about the holiday season is that you can truly express your personality. For the diva in all of us, these leopard print snowflake ornaments show off any woman’s sassy side. Make one for a statement; several for a theme.
For this project, you will need:
– 4″ unpainted Alpine snowflake ornament (found online at Cabin Crafters)
– Krylon Interior Exterior Paint in Tomato
– Reminisce Leopard Print scrapbook paper (available in stores or online at Paper Addict)
– Sponge brush
– Mod Podge or other decoupage medium
– Popsicle stick
– Acrylic finishing spray
– Silver acrylic paint pen
– Silver scrapbook cord (for hanging)
Always make sure when using spray paint that, before beginning, your workspace is adequately covered with newspaper and that the area is well ventilated.
Using the wooden ornament as a template, trace the shape directly onto the scrapbook paper with a pencil. With scissors, cut the shape out. Mark and measure the same shape onto the cutout, reducing the overall size by one half inch. Cut to the smaller size carefully. (Note: This may take some practice, so be patient.)
Coat the front of the four inch unpainted Alpine snowflake ornament well with Krylon Interior Exterior Paint in Tomato. Allow the front side to dry fifteen to twenty minutes before repeating the process with the backside of the ornament. Once that has dried, repeat the process with a second and third coat of paint, or until the color is a rich and vibrant red shade.
With a sponge brush, add a generous amount of decoupage medium directly onto the wooden red snowflake ornament. Lay the paper cutout shape onto the center of the wood. (This should leave a one half inch border of red around the leopard print paper.) With a popsicle stick, smooth the paper so that there are no bubbles or ridges. Allow the decoupage medium to dry full.
Add a silver border around the print paper with an acrylic paint pen. (If you wish to add words, phrases, or any additional details or designs now would be the time to do so.) Once the paint has dried, apply three thick coats of acrylic finishing spray and allow it to set. Cut a length of silver scrapbook cord and tie to the top of the snowflake ornament for hanging.
TIP: This project also makes for a wonderful table marker setting for a holiday party! Write your guest’s name onto the ornament, and place at their spot for a fun holiday table addition.
