Its beginning to look a lot like Christmas, and that means its time for new holiday themed flavors. Every year it seems like a handful of companies decide this is the best way to bring new customers, and keep old customers happy. Every year though there also seems to be one product that just isn’t quite right, something that seems surprising to those who try it. This year I think the honor goes to 7-Up.
We all know the 7-Up company, either because we grew up when their mascot “the spot” was still popular or because our parents forced the soda on us when we were home sick from school. 7-Up never changes, even if its been years you know that the next time you have a glass, it will taste exactly the same as it did before. That is until this year.
Available in a limited edition comes Pomegranate 7-Up. I don’t know about you, but that combination sounded strange to me. When thinking of flavorings to add to soda, pomegranate doesn’t rank high on the list. I do like pomegranates, and I like the Ocean Spray Cranberry-Pomegranate juice, but mixing it with 7-Up doesn’t sound the greatest.
Pomegranate 7-Up is a far cry from traditional 7-Up, right down to the coloring and bottle. Gone is the clear lemon-lime soda in a green bottle, replaced with a bright red colored soda in a clear bottle. When I say this soda is red, I mean its really red, an almost blinding red color. It almost looks more like one of those florescent colored fruit drinks marketed for kids than it does a soda.
7-Up went all out for this limited edition soda, right down to the label on the bottle. The label itself is kind of burgundy colored, with a big picture of a pomegranate next to the logo. The logo itself has changed a little with a whole new color to match the new theme. There’s also a few snowflakes scattered around the label, just to show that this is one soda that won’t be around after the holidays.
As for the taste, this one is pretty good. I would say that its significantly better than holiday edition sodas released in the past. There’s the traditional 7-Up flavor, with a slight bite to it from the pomegranate. As someone who regularly drinks pomegranate juice, I have to say that there isn’t a very strong flavor of pomegranate, more like someone’s version of what pomegranate should taste like.
Generally speaking, this is a pretty good twist on the classic 7-Up taste. I’ll definitely pick it up again. If you want to try the Pomegranate 7-Up for yourself, get one now before they’re gone for good.
