The 4th of July is right around the corner. This year, many of the fireworks bans in Southern Colorado are being lifted. That means an explosion in business. Fireworks are flying off the shelves.
At Affordable Flags and Fireworks , a fresh shipment of fireworks just arrived.
Big, and small, colorful, and just loud: the fuse has been lit under firework fanatics.
Jody Ilett is the manager at Affordable Flags and Fireworks. “It’s picked up tremendously,” she said. “In the past week, every day, we’re selling fireworks off the shelves.”
It’s a welcome sight. Last summer, dry conditions forced a ban against even selling fireworks. Ilett says she had to just standby and watch the business fizzle out like a dud firecracker. Thanks to the bans being lifted this year, business is booming.
Before you stock up, you need to know the laws.
It’s illegal to shoot off fireworks in Colorado Springs city limits. Fireworks , however, they are legal in the counties as long as the ban doesn’t change.
“In Colorado Springs, Fountain , and Manitou Springs they’re banned totally,” Ilett said. “So, it’s not legal to light them in city limits at all.”
Fireworks other than permitted professional displays are illegal in the City of Colorado Springs.
Fireworks are allowed in the counties, but don’t plan on buying any of the big guns. Unincorporated areas of Colorado Springs can legally use fireworks.
In the state of Colorado , if it leaves the ground or explodes without warning it’s not legal at all.
All types with a fuse and or requiring a flame for ignition, including sparklers are illegal.
A fire started by fireworks that threatens or damages property is a crime of Arson.
Possession, use and or the sale of fireworks is subject to a fine up to and including $500
If you get caught in Colorado Springs, you could pay the $500 fine, and spend 90 days in jail.
There’s no way of knowing if a ban will go in to effect anytime soon. Fire officials say, if this dry, hot weather keeps up there could be a ban. Check your local fire dept. for updates.
If you really don’t want to mess with the home fireworks or just want some added fun, there are also plenty of places to see professional fireworks , all set throughout the Independence Day Holiday.
