Eating in New York: American Burger & Co. (100 W 32nd St – corner of 6th Ave.; New York, NY 10001)
One of the biggest problems with many of the restaurants you’ll come to find in New York City, is you never can be sure what it is that you’re dealing with. The place could be an absolute dump or the facts could be much less severe than that but the truth remains that when you are in a foreign place or when you are in a foreign city or when you have just never been to a particular location before, there is much which can be left to the imagination.
But it is also true that one of our favorite pastimes, sometimes, is that we will go out and really indulge ourselves in a burger and some fries. One of the spots where this can be attempted in New York City is just outside of Herald Square and Macy’s; down the street from MSG and just next door to the Manhattan Mall. The American Burger & Co. is this spot and on their menu they pride themselves on “What’s so great about our burgers?” By calling out that their burgers as 6 ounces sirloin beef, 100% USDA pure American beef with no fillers. They even relay that all of the their meat is ground fresh daily and their burgers are hand shaped and charcoal grilled and served on their homemade sesame seed buns.
And when you look at their menu is pretty Burger-centric; there are not a lot of other things to choose from. You’ve got a couple of different kinds of burger, turkey burger, chicken sandwich, specialty burgers, burger toppings, houses soup and beef chili, and a few different types of salad. And of course you’ve got your fries and your drink. That’s pretty much it at American Burger & Co.
But the real test is the taste tests and this is one which American Burger & Co. does pretty well in. The time I was there recently I got the Santa Fe burger which is one of their house specialties; jalapeno salsa, Jack cheese, shredded lettuce; it was really quite good. If you look closely on the burger toppings you will see that you can get red onion at no additional charge. My friend who I was with got a straight cheeseburger with cheddar cheese and she complained that the bun was too large. “I forgot I was eating a burger,” she said. I didn’t really notice much difference in size between out patties and maybe I just like bread more, but the bun didn’t really bother me too much.
There was one thing that we both agreed on were these with fries. Idaho fries, freshly cut and double fried for extra crispiness! Umm-hmmm! Honestly, she liked the fries better than the burger and I think that I’ll have to agree. While I did enjoy the burger quite much, these fries are out of sight.
I’m eager to go back and try the chili and maybe get a side salad with some of those fries as part of a big lunch or dinner sometime. But if you’re looking for some great fries, amidst the melee that is New York, New York, then look no further than American Burger & Co.
