Communication and collaboration among individuals of different learning styles and personalities is important not only in a professional environment but also in the whole of society. Learning styles differ from person to person. Some people might learn on a more verbal/linguistic level while others derive a better understanding through mathematical and logical conclusions. Different learning styles are often the result of different personalities and effective communication and collaboration will differ among individuals with different types of each.
Learning Styles Communication and Collaboration
Characteristics of the Verbal/Linguistic learning style are analyzing the use of one’s own language, remembering terms easily, and understanding syntax and word meaning. People who are classified under this learning style generally explain, learn, and teach better when using humor.
Characteristics of the Interpersonal learning style are seeing things through others perspectives, cooperating within a group, and communicating verbally and non-verbally. People who are classified under this learning style are usually good at creating and maintaining personal relationships.
Characteristics of the Naturalistic learning style are deep understandings of nature and appreciation of the delicate balance in nature.
In order for these three learning styles to communicate and collaborate effectively, each member must use their strengths to make up for another’s weakness. Those with verbal/linguistic strengths can effectively communicate in writing and can also effectively use persuasion. Thos with interpersonal strengths can keep the group running smoothly and communicate verbally. Those with naturalistic strengths will be bale to keep the group balanced and promote negotiation during times of conflict.
Personality Styles Communication and Collaboration
Different personality styles thrown together can either clash or compliment. Personality is the first thing one person notices about another when communicating with them and learning the different strengths about each personality type can help to improve communication and collaboration.
Thinkers, Givers, and Organizers can work effectively and efficiently together by using each of their own strengths for the betterment of the group. Thinkers are good at problem solving, exploring potentials and ideas, and developing models and systems. Givers are honest and are good at cultivating their own potential as well as the potential of others. Organizers can keep the group focused and have a well developed sense of responsibility.
Each of these characteristics in a group are valuable. Each personality style contributes something different to the communication of the group making for a better-rounded working environment. Thinkers can work on problem solving while Givers are able to give their honest opinion on projects. Organizers can keep the flow of the team running smoothly.
Were every member of a team to use the same learning style and have the same personality, the team would suffer. A more diverse group of individuals will make the team better a whole. Each learning style brings different strengths in order to cancel out weaknesses. Personality styles do the same. Having a diverse team of different learning styles and personalities can sometimes cause conflict, but by knowing the characteristics of those on the team it is easier to understand team mates and create a communication and collaboration strategy that works for everyone.
