This is a tutorial on how to convert videos to be playable for the Sony PSP. We will be using easy-to-use and, most importantly, free converter PSP Video 9. Make sure to go download PSP Video 9 version 1.74 instead of the newest version because it is easier to understand and isn’t full of annoying ads.
You will also need a way to transfer data from your PC to PSP. Either directly connect you PSP via a USB cable (the PSP uses a mini-USB cable) or put the PSP memory stick into the PC via a memory card reader (the PSP uses the Memory Stick Pro Duo). If you are connecting to the PSP directly, make sure you go to Settings > USB Connection to connect to the PSP.
After downloading and installing PSP Video 9 version 1.74 and finding a way to transfer data to your Memory Stick Duo, we are ready to begin!
Step One: Setup
Before you start converting, make sure you have the right setup. Click the Setup bar to bring up the Settings, Profiles, Profile Picker and Console menus. For new users, you only need to worry about the Settings and Profile Picker.
For the Settings menu, set the destination to where you want your converted video to end up in the “Output Video to:” option. You can also let PSP Video 9 version 1.74 find your PSP if it is connected to your PC so that the program will transfer the converted video to the PSP automatically.
The Profile Picker menu is a great little tool to pick the quality of your video. It already has preset settings for anime, movies and music videos. In addition it can also calculate the size of the converted video.
Mess with the other setup settings if you want. When you are done, it’s time to convert.
Step Two: Conversion
Now go to the convert bar to start converting your video. Go click “Transcode New Video” if you want to change the quality of the video (if you haven’t done so in step one); click start to start converting. Otherwise choose “One-Click Transcode” for the default quality settings and your video will start converting instantly. Add as many videos as you want as PSP Video 9 version 1.74 can batch convert them.
Steep Three: Transferring
When the conversion is done, it is time to transfer your video (if PSP Video 9 version 1.74 hasn’t done it for you already). Make sure your PSP is connected directly or the memory stick is inserted in the memory card reader; then locate which directory it is located. As you would notice, your converted video will have two files (.MP4 and .THM, which is a thumbnail for the video). Copy both files to MP_ROOT > 100MNV01.
After that, you are finally done. Congratulations! Now go check out your newly converted video on the PSP.
