I remember as a kid there were Cotton Caper’s everywhere. They were equivalent to today’s Mandee’s and GAP. Only they were the most popular in the early 80’s.
Back then you could stop by and get clothing, jewelry, underwear, and other cute fashion items. However as time has gone by Cotton Caper is a name that most people have never even heard of, and as of now there is only one left on Long Island that I am aware of. I have searched all over the place looking on the Internet for any surviving cotton capers, and my search led me to just one. However I already knew it was there, I just wondered, if it was the last of the Mohican’s.
Seeing how my search led me to nowhere ville, and back. I figured I would come on and write a review about the one last Cotton Caper that I know of on Long Island.
This Cotton Caper is located on 376 Main Street in Center Moriches. (Long Island, New York) 11934.
As of now this tiny shop struggles to keep up with the surrounding real estate/travelers agents/ dentist’s, and of course the high rent on the building. Keeping a mom and pop type shop in the main town of Center Moriches is not only difficult due to the lack of traffic visiting these shops, but they struggle to remain open because rent goes up, and all that can afford such absurd prices belong to agencies. However Cotton Caper has managed to remain open since the birth of the store in Center Moriches.
I like many people who visit/work in this town wish to have Cotton Caper remain there for as long as possible, seeing how it’s location is not the greatest in the world, I figured I would tell everyone willing to read this about the store, and why they should shop there.
For one, Cotton Caper really brings that old town charm to Center Moriches. If it were to close down, it would turn into another frigging law office, and trust me, I work in this neighborhood, and there is honestly only 3 or 4 mom and pop shops left in town. I, like many others would like to see the remaining shops stay.
In Cotton Caper you can find unique hand made clothing, hand made candles that smell absolutely delicious, and I easily can say they can be compared to Yankee candles. They are just lovely. Candles are available in scents like cotton candy, pumpkin pie, apple spice, gardenia, ice cream, coffee, vanilla, fresh linen, cotton blossoms, honey suckle, and many more. I have bought a fair share of their home made candles, and they truly are mouth watering.
They also sell designer purses for prices you won’t find anywhere else, they sell a wide collection of items from Avon, and gold and silver jewelery for prices you won’t find in department stores.
Best of all even though their prices are cheap, their items are not. Their clothing is all of high quality material that will not tear, or begin to fray like Mandee’s store clothing does.
Cotton Caper still uses an old school cash register, which really makes for an old fashioned shopping experience. The ladies who work there are always smiling, friendly, and eager to help you.
As of now, they are displaying the most lovely hand made Bohemian skirts and dresses. Their sunglasses are designers, and they are all on sale.
In all honesty what keeps them alive though in my opinion are their cheap designer bags. I find myself buying bags from them time and time again. It is not uncommon to see name brands such as coach, Chanel, LV, and many, many more. You can also buy matching wallets here as well.
It would be a damn shame to see such an awesome little shop get buried under a law office. If more people stopped in and took a look, I am positive they would walk out purchasing something. Cotton Caper always has necklaces, rings, and earrings on sale right out for you to pick up and try it on for yourself. Prices on these display racks range from $5-$9 for really gorgeous pieces of silver jewelry.
Other jewelery sits behind the glass display boxes. These pieces are always on sale, and they constantly are getting new things in.
In the winter time you can visit the store for really cheap plush blankets and hand made knitted sweaters, that are gorgeous, unique, and cheap.
I wanted to get this information out, and make more people aware of the lovely little shop that sits hidden in the middle of town in Center Moriches. The more people that are aware of it, the better chances this shop has for survival. So if you find yourself cruising through this town, please stop in and take a look at what they have to offer. Friendly staff, gorgeous hand made items, and designer bags and wallets.
