DEEP RIVER – Thirteen years ago, the Deep River Merchants Association began the annual tradition of sponsoring the Deep River Merchants Family Day.
Since then, the event has grown to include many activities throughout downtown and beyond.
This year on Saturday, Sept. 15th, residents and visitors will be able to gather together for fun at this small town festival.
“The merchants want to give back to the residents that have supported them and it’s a great day for the whole family,” said Gina Sopneski, Administrative Assistant to the First Selectman.
The fun run starts at 8:30 a.m. at Devitt’s Field while a 5k run will start at Devitt’s Field at 9 a.m. and walkers are welcome to participate.
The 5k run is sponsored by the Deep River Parks and Recreation Department and the Rotary Club and will occur rain or shine.

The Deep River Merchants Association sponsors the carnival at Deep River Elementary School which will run between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. and tickets will be sold for $1 each.
The carnival will include a variety of attractions like hayrides, pumpkin paintings, rock wall, bouncy house, serpent tube, and dunk tank.
Readers and baked goods fans can attend the annual book and bake sale sponsored by the Friends of the Deep River Library on the lawn between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.
Those loving food and competition can watch a pie eating contest at the Ivory Pub at 2:30 p.m. while Deep River Pizza will sponsor a pizza eating contest between 2:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. for those between the ages of 6 and 15.
At 3:30 p.m., the Famous Pet Parade, sponsored by The Pet’s Choice, will be meeting at Liberty Bank and pets must be in costume and on a leash or in a container.
Prizes will be awarded at Deep River Elementary School.
Other events of the day include craft activities, merchant raffles, a music concert, caramel apple decorating, sing a longs, hat and t-shirt painting, pumpkin painting, a sidewalk chalk art contest, egg omelet making, a pancake toss, hay rides, crazy hair, free balloons, and much more.
Residents and visitors won’t want to miss the Fireworks Extravaganza at Plattwood Park at 8:30 p.m. which is sponsored by the Deep River Parks and Recreation Department and Haynes Materials and will feature music along with fireworks.
The rain date for the fireworks is Sunday, Sept. 16.
