When my sister was shopping for wedding dresses in 2004, we happened upon this little shop called Diane’s Dream Brides in Livonia, MI. Even though she really liked the dresses she tried on there, she still wanted to cover all her basis. We spent the next few months visiting almost every single dress shop around Metro Detroit and found many dresses, but in the end, the one at Diane’s was the one she bought.
Our experience at Diane’s that year was so great, that it was the only place I wanted to shop when I started looking for dresses last year. I liked the very first dress I tried one! But once again we decided to check out a few more stores. After a many disappointing experiences at other bridal shops, I ended up back at Diane’s to get the dress I loved (see picture).
Even though the dress was the main reason we both decided to purchase from Diane’s, that was far from the only reason. Here are all the reasons you should make Diane’s your one and only wedding dress shop in Metro Detroit!
1) Great Dresses
First and foremost, they have great dresses from most of the designers you will find on TheKnot.com. There is a great range of styles all the way from simple and elegant to poofy and big! I actually liked a few of the dresses I tried on there, but the first one I picked was the best :)
2) Wonderful Service (where everyone knows your name)
What really helped with our decision was the service you get at Diane’s. The girls that work there are always very friendly and ready to answer your questions. The same girls are there year after year and they actually remember you! They may not have always remembered our names, but they did remember us in general and were happy to see us whenever we came in. The fact that the employees stay over time really shows that they enjoy what they are doing.
At a few other bridal shops we came across snobby checkin girls who didn’t even look up when we walked in! In fact, some stores even seemed annoyed to see us. Even if these other stores had the same dress at a cheaper price, I would never have given them any business because they were so rude.
3) Great Flexibility
When it comes to actually making appointments to get fitted for a dress, they are pretty flexible. There are only certain days the seamstress comes in, but when I was in a crunch and time was running out, they managed to squeeze me in for appointments when I needed them.
Unlike some stores, which told us “we can’t do that, we can’t do this”, Diane’s was able to make the changes to my dress that I needed. When I asked for straps to be added, it was just a simple matter of choosing which ones I liked best. There are a few things that cannot be done to a dress, but for most things they will try their best to give you what you want.
Best of all, they hold the dress until you need it – so there is no need to store it in your musty basement for weeks. We picked my dress up a few days before the wedding.
4) Real Knowledge and no lies!
When we were at David’s Bridal, the lady who helped us told my sister that every single dress she tried on was “fabulous” or “gorgeous” on her. The truth was, there was many she didn’t like and she wasn’t looking for a saleswomen, she was looking for someone who could help. I noticed this at other dress shops as well. However at Diane’s, they told the truth! The very first couple of dresses my sister tried on, they instantly said “no, that doesn’t work for you”. Obviously if you liked the dress they’d still let you buy it and work to make it the best, but they had the knowledge and experience to know what works for different types of people.
They put their knowledge and years of experience to good use through the whole process. They knew exactly what edits could be done to our dresses without even having to look it up most of the time. They could help us find the perfect accessories based on our descriptions (even when we hardly knew what we wanted!). So if you are as clueless as most brides, it’s a great place to go ask questions because they have dealt with 100s of brides and they know how to deal with any problem.
5) Bridesmaid dresses too!
I also got my bridesmaids dresses at Diane’s just because it was easier. They have a large variety of all the top brands. Even though a lot of the dresses could be found elsewhere, they offered the same great service to my bridesmaids as they did to me so why would we even attempt another store?
6) Never over-crowded
I’ve been in there many times browsing and trying on, and there always seemed to be plenty of room for me. Although at times a bride would bring her entire family to a fitting (or so it seemed), the staff would still make sure I the help I needed and I never had to wait too long. Whenever we were just browsing, we usually found the place to be pretty empty with only a few other brides-to-be. Weekends are more crowded than weekdays of course, but even then we were able to get in and look around.
7) Best of all: No pushy rules, no appointments to try on, no stalking!
As mentioned above, my sister also took us to David’s Bridal in her quest for a dress. While I agree that you can get a beautiful dress from David’s Bridal at a decent price, this place just was not for us. At David’s, they want your name, number, address, everything from the second you walk in the door. They don’t believe in “just looking” and they don’t believe in trying on unless you have an appointment! Also, appointments are hard to come by, usually meaning you have to wait at least a week before you can get in there.
We also tried other places in Metro Detroit such as Elizabeth’s Bridal Manor in Northville. Once again we had to give our name and information right off the bat. They made us take our shoes off as part of their rules to keep the dresses clean or something – DUMB! I was wearing sandals and was not happy with having to walk around barefoot. They would not just let us LOOK, because their rules seem to be that only they like to touch the dresses. So they constantly brought me dresses I did not like, and the only time they let me look was when they got frustrated with me for saying NO to everything they brought out.
So when we called Diane’s and they told us we didn’t need any appointments to browse AND try on dresses, we were surprised. We were left alone while we browsed, with the staff checking on us only once or twice. We were welcome to visit as often as we liked with no pressure to buy. We actually went for my sister to try on her dress at least 5-6 times, and when it was my turn I went to try on my dress 3-4 times as well. They probably wouldn’t care if you want to try it on 30 times before you decide, and that is why we both decided to buy our dresses there, no pushy people!
