Dine Out Shreveport: Murrell's, Trejo's, and Strawn's

by wet bin

With the economy in the shape that it is in, dining out in is often not an option. People are looking for more budget-friendly ways to wine and dine. The Shreveport and Bossier City metro area has many types of restaurants to choose from ranging from home-cooking to Mexican food. I am a foodie and I am also very tight with my money and I have found the 3 best restaurants in the area that you can get an excellent meal for under $10.

First on our food expedition is Murrell’s. Murrell’s is a casual diner located at the cross section of East King’s Hwy and Youree Drive in Shreveport. By looking at the place, you wouldn’t think much of it. Murrell’s was established after World War 2 by Murrell Stansell Sr. in 1947. The place has been popular all these years and is a place that people honestly visit religiously their entire lives! The waitresses know you by name and know what you are ordering before you even sit down. Murrell’s offers primarily southern home cooking but they also offer really good hamburgers. The meatloaf, mashed potatoes, and brown gravy are so good that you would almost slap your mama. The pricing is affordable too. You can fill up for under $10.00 and it is well worth it. Murrell’s is open 24/7 so stop by and try it out. You will not regret it!

Next on our stop is Trejo’s Mexican Restaurant. This is a casual restaurant with several locations in the Shreveport/Bossier area but he ones I usually frequent are on Airline Drive and Shreveport-Barksdale Highway. They both have wonderful staff and excellent food for a good, affordable price. I love Mexican food and when I think of Mexican food, Trejo’s comes to mind immediately. They have many appetizers to choose from but I recommend their nachos. I guarantee that they will be the best nachos that you have ever had! Not only does Trejo’s make some of the best fajitas, burritos, and enchilada dinners, they also make their own salsa and it is awesome. $10 will buy you a fun and festive time at Trejo’s.

Last, but certainly not least, is a familiar Shreveport/Bossier staple known as Strawn’s Eat Shop. There are 3 locations but the only one I have patronized is the one on Kings, the flagship diner. Strawn’s is a family owned diner and has been in business since 1944. The stores are very colorful and have murals painted on the walls so it’s also a feast for your eyes. I personally love their Ice Box Pies. I love the strawberry pies. They are so good that you could eat a whole one yourself if you didn’t limit yourself to one piece. Strawn’s is definitely worth a day trip and you can eat for under $10!

Murrell’s, Trejo’s, and Strawn’s are 3 staples in the Shreveport/Bossier economy and have been for a long time. They are good to your stomach, food for your soul, and easy on your wallet. Who would’ve thought you could buy a bit of happiness for $10?
