Recently I witnessed the result of a team who have forgotten there is no “I” in the word team. There is no room for personal agenda’s when lives are at stake. And, just like with parents, clients will go to the weakest link if they know there is division in the ranks.
A lesbian client who was mad that her attempts toward a beautiful girl had gone unnoticed turned violent. She approached the girl and when the girl told her to back off, the pursuer became violent.
When the staff came to deal with the situation, it was clear that each had their own agenda. One, who had issues with homosexuals wanted to throw the girl out of the facility.
Another, who never wants to put anyone out, even if deserved, went against that.
The two security guards also had personal agenda’s. One, seemed to be mad that she had to be pulled away from the fan and her music, and the other, just had no clue.
The problem is that they had this power struggle in the middle of the floor surrounded by clients instead of privately.
Solution (Wrong One)
So, how do you deal with a situation that could ultimately lead to violence at another time, when none of the team is working together?
The girls who were to be put out, followed the director around to get her away from the other staff to spin the tail to make them look good.. The director made the decision to not ask for the details, but undermined the people she pays to handle these types of problems.
Solution (Right One)
The director owed it to her staff to hear their view, and for them to come into agreement for any consequences.
Instead, the aggressor has gotten away with her action because she knows that she can go over the heads of the people who deal with her on a daily basis.
Basically, this was a complete breakdown of the management and staff. The situation was not a difficult one, but it was one where it showed their weakness.
The aggressor has a girlfriend, who is tired of the lifestyle. She is afraid to leave the aggressor because of the physical and emotional abuse. Meanwhile, the aggressor wants to cheat and fight. She has caused multiple fights in the center, but has rarely received any consequence. Her view is that certain staff are wrapped around her finger.
As for the staff, the personal views toward homosexuality played too much of a role in deciding a fair consequence. Had it not been brought into the equation then a fair consequence could have been handed down. The staff tied the hands of the director by their bigotry.
