Nothing could be cuter this Halloween than dressing your small child up as a red and black ladybug. Not only is this Halloween costume very cute, it is also easy and inexpensive to make. Follow the directions below to create this wonderful Halloween costume for kids.
Materials Needed for Halloween Costume
1. Two large pieces of cardboard
2. Red and black acrylic craft paint
3. Wide black ribbon
4. Black construction paper
5. Black pipe cleaners
6. Stapler or tape
7. Black long-sleeved shirt and black pants
Making the Ladybug Costume Body
The ladybug body for this Halloween costume is made from two circles or ovals of the cardboard. Cut the cardboard oval for the back wide enough to cover the child’s shoulders and arms. Cut the one for the front smaller so the child can still use their arms easily.
The smaller oval for the chest area should be painted black. If you want to get really creative, paint some slightly brown or grey lines on it to indicate the body segments.
The back oval should be painted bright red with a bold black stripe down the middle. Then, paint four or five black dots on either side of the line. Remember, ladybugs are symmetrical.
Use a scissor or knife to make small holes in the shoulder area of each cardboard oval. Use the wide black ribbon to attach the two. This ribbon will hang over your child’s shoulder and the cardboard ovals will hang fore and aft.
Making the Ladybug Costume Head Gear
Since a ladybug is an insect, it should have two antennae coming out of its head. This can be done by purchasing a bug antennae headband for your child’s Halloween costume, or creating one yourself.
The easiest way to make the ladybug costume headgear is to use a strip of black construction paper. Measure out a strip just large enough to sit comfortable on your child’s head.
Then, take two black pipe cleaners and curl the ends slightly. Attach the pipe cleaners to the black headband where you believe the antennae should be located.
Wearing the Ladybug Halloween Costume
As a base for the ladybug Halloween costume, your child should wear black pants or tights and a black, long-sleeved shirt. Their arms and legs will end up looking like the ladybug’s legs. A hooded sweatshirt is a great idea as it will cover your child’s hair and look more like a bug’s head.
When the child is dressed, simply slip the cardboard ovals onto her body. The wide ribbons should rest comfortably on the shoulders. String can be used, but it might cut into the shoulders and be uncomfortable before the night is through.
Your child is now ready to go trick-or-treating or to the Halloween party!
