In today’s religious society, we are told that miracles can happen when we least expect them. We are also taught about the stories in the Bible, and are introduced to the miracles that happened in the past. Why is it that we do not hear about modern day miracles that would rival those in the Bible?
View 1: Symbolist’s Belief
Some people believe that the reason why we do not see miracles happening today is because they never happened in the first place. These people believe that the Bible is actually a collection of symbolic stories. These people are referred to as Biblical Symbolists.
This school of thought teaches that all of the miracles of the Bible were actually symbols for something. They point out the parables of Jesus as being an argument that the Bible is full of symbolism.
View 2: Nonbeliever’s Belief
Another simple explanation as to why there are not miracles today is that there never were miracles in the past since there is not a God. The easiest explanation would be to just throw out the Bible in the first place.
View 3: God is Sleeping Belief
This school of thought teaches that God is, “sleeping.” This belief states that God has lost some type of interest in humanity and has taken a standoffish approach to us. The reason why there are not any miracles is because God is not willing to allow them to happen.
Some people will say that the reason why God is not interested in humanity is because of the debauchery that humanity partakes in. There is no answer for the debauchery that happened in the past when miracles did occur.
View 4: Pentecost Was the Last Miracle
Some people believe that Pentecost was the last miracle that God allowed. These people believe that since God had started to gain a stronger following, He decided that there was no longer any reason for miracles.
View 5: Miracles Do Happen Privately
Many people believe that there are substantial miracles that still happen today. Many of these people will state that the miracles that happen today are kept quite for the most part. People are worried that they will be ridiculed for stating that a miracle occurred, so they do not talk about them.
View 6: Miracles vs. Science
The final school of thought about miracles is that miracles do occur, but science simply tries to disprove them. In our age of science, most people would not believe that a miracle happened even if it happened to them.
This school teaches that people have become so reliant on science that they will not accept anything that contradicts scientific study. People’s minds will block out any possibility of a miracle from happening.
Whatever your belief is about miracles, one thing remains. Miracles are one of the few issues that everyone has some kind of opinion on.
