Most everyone has heard of Doctors Without Borders. It may have gained some of its popularity through Leo on Will and Grace. A doctor that often went to other countries for months on end to use his expertise on saving lives.
Now there are other organizations that are working under a similar premise. One such organization is Mothers Without Borders. Its work is based in helping orphans under the care of moms who want to spread a little love to those less fortunate. Typically moms will be called to other countries to help orphanages short on staff. There is also an organization called Engineers Without Borders and another called Lawyers Without Borders and still another called Teachers Without Borders.
All of these organizations seem to be concerned with helping the less privileged in other countries. Many of those countries aren’t exactly safe for them to work in. There are some very real dangers such as getting caught in the middle of gunfire and disease. Another problem is lack of supplies and having to make due with what is available. While most of these organizations seem to follow in the footsteps of Doctors Without Borders some have tended to those who need help in their own backyard.
These new organizations based in the charity work of “Without Borders” are opening up a new avenue for people who have expertise in a given field to share their knowledge and skills with others. Young adults can benefit through shared knowledge of their professional peers. “Without Borders” can give seniors who volunteer time a new sense of being. The opportunity to realize just how important they are and that they can impact lives for the better. By reaching out and sharing what they know they will have a purpose that goes beyond retiring. Middle aged adults that help in “Without Borders” might actually never make it to the point of having a mid-life crisis.
“Without Borders” can be created in the same way as many other charities. If someone recognizes a need they can call for others to get involved along with them. For instance, if someone feels strongly about the plight of the rain forest, most people do, then they might want to create an organization called “Forestation Without Borders.” This could be an organization where people replant trees and plants in areas that has been deforested and are now bare. They would be responsible for replanting trees typical for that region and insuring their survival. This means they would also have to water them and make sure the soil was rich in nutrients needed for growth and survival of the trees and plants.
