Your dorm room is probably the first room you will ever decorate entirely by yourself. Here are some tips to get you started.
Decorating a room is like getting dressed in the morning; it’s done in layers. First you should find an inspiration piece so that when you are out shopping you will know exactly which colors and patterns and a theme will begin to emerge.
AllPosters.com has millions of posters. You’ll need some art work for your walls, and posters are a great way to go, you can get a large poster 28X40 inches for $19-30. Buy some special poster adhesive so you don’t risk marring the walls. There are many to choose from, but personally I might choose Tournee Du Chat Noir, by Théophile Alexandre Steinlen. See the links at the end of the article to see my picks. I love this poster neutral tan and black with a pop of orange color.
Now that you have a poster for inspiration, you can choose the rest of the items for your room. A small rug adds color and provides warmth. Target has a great rug selection, and a good sized rug about 4X6 is around $89, they have so many designs to choose from, and sizes you can get a smaller size for less in many of your favorite designs. For the poster I chose the Lola design would go nicely. See my pick at the end of the article.
A great big reading pillow with arms:, The cheapest available at Target for around $16 is perfect in Tan.
It’s important to think about utility as well as style when you go out to buy your dorm room decor.
Some of the more popular college dorm room necessities are things like a full length mirror. Target.com has a great mirror that hangs over the back of the door for about $17. It only comes in black or white. Please see link at the end of the article.
Milk Crates are also very popular dorm room must haves. Containerstore.com has dairy crates in five different colors for about $10 each, if you have a Container store in your area you can order on line and pick them up. See links at the end of the article. It’s nice to have at least 2 or three of these as they can serve as a closet storage organization, laundry and can also be a quick seat when needed. You can also transform them if you are creative, See the link at the end of the article to spruce them up.
You can really personalize you space for under a hundred dollars. Don’t forget linens like towels and a bedspread and sheets.
