The Price is Right has a new host, Drew Carey. Drew Carey took over as host for this long-running television game show, replacing Bob Barker. Is Drew Carey the right choice to replace Bob Barker?
The Price is Right is the longest running daytime television game show in the United States. It began, in its current form, in 1972 with Bob Barker as host. The first series of the show premiered in September of 1972. Those were Bob Barker’s younger years. The show continued its success over the years, however, with Bob Barker and mostly the same format!
You might think that some other game show has been around for as long, but you would be wrong. Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy weren’t born until the 1980’s.
The Price is Right even has spin-offs in different countries. You can watch similar shows in Colombia, South America, Australia and China, for instance.
The show’s popularity and success has been partly due to its wonderful host, Bob Barker. So what will happen now with Drew Carey?
Drew Carey is a popular actor/ comedian. He gained his popularity for the Drew Carey show that premiered in 1995. The show was funny, and worth watching. But I can’t say I would have found Drew Carey ‘s character to be as appealing as Bob Barker’s presence on the Price is Right. Granted, the two were in totally different roles.
Drew Carey then hosted Whose Line is it Anyway? This show was also hilarious. Some of the antics displayed were just unforgettable. However, Drew wasn’t really the one making the show funny, once he became the host. He kind of lost his appeal, in my opinion.
Drew Carey does have what it takes to make the audience laugh, granted, but is this what makes a great television game host?
The Price is Right is defiinitely in for a change. Bob Barker had a sort of flair, a sort of style, a sense of purpose. He was kind-hearted and affectionate, and professional in his actions. There was just something about him that “drew” others to him for many years. And it was as if he never aged!
I always enjoyed the Price is Right. I remember watching it over the summers when I was growing up, at eleven am every morning during the week. It was addicting, and you just wanted to cheer for the people to win. It also tested your product knowledge and product pricing. It really was exciting. The best thing about the show is that you never know what the next game will be. There are so many different games!
The Price is Right has always had a set format, with people guessing the price of a first item, and then the winner getting to play a game. Then there is the first chance to be in the showcase showdown, by spinning the money wheel. This is repeated, and two players get into the showcase showdown. The showcase showdown is exciting because there are some incredible prizes to be won.
This year, there will be a new set for the Price is Right, to go along with its new host.
Drew Carey is totally different. He is a comedian. He wants everyone to laugh. He has a corny sense of humor and uses his nerd-like looks to his advantage.
Perhaps he is just what the Price is Right needed- a fresh new twist on the show. Drew Carey will have a different way of doing things, a different way of speaking. He will make things comical instead of just exciting. Perhaps he can really put some lifeblood back into a worn gameshow.
Whatever happens, the show will most likely go on. Its sense of appeal isn’t due to the host alone. Or at least we hope. It would be a shame to lose the longest- running American game show of all time, just because we changed hosts.
Good luck Drew Carey, as the new host of the Price is Right!
