Tonight’s episode is nothing less than what we have come to expect from our faithful E.R. cast. The drama was high, and they definitely delivered. Tonight’s episode In a Different Light, showed just how things are not what they so seem to be. During all the chaos of what is day to day life in the E.R., Dr Moretti finds that it is not only his duty in life as it seems, but also his doctors obligation to put Abby in her place all though she is really trying to make an effort to not let him get to her. So when he asked her to work triage she didn’t put up an argument at any of it. This would not be a normal day at the E.R. but what exactly is?
The show opened with Dr Pratt looking for Dr Anspagh who, you may remember is hospital administration and one we don’t see as often as we used to. Dr Pratt feels that Dr Moretti doesn’t know all that is going on in the E.R., and Pratt feels he is more suited for the job. He tells Anspagh that but he gets brushed off with a “come see me in two years.” And off he was to his next board meeting. Discouraged but not defeated, Dr. Pratt goes back to work, and his next patient happens to be a woman who came in with a scalp laceration, but she had been in a car accident and they had to make sure that she was not bleeding internally. Dr. Pratt gives her the full work up but when they gave her the ultrasound they found that she was pregnant so they did a more extensive ultrasound to find out if her organs looked alright. When she asks about her students condition they ask why they were in the car together and she explains that he had just got his driving permit and had begged her to take him driving. The boy she was asking about came in with severe bleeding and was having difficulty breathing and that was in addition to all the pain he was in. Archie, Hope, and Samantha try their best to stabilize him so they can assess him and send him up to surgery if it was warranted. At one point he becomes severely critical and they have to not only give him a breathing tube, they l ultimately tried to shock him back into rhythm, but are unsuccessful. At this point Archie and Hope are giving him C.P.R. and still unresponsive they still keep trying as he is just a kid, and his mother is right there. Dr Moretti however comes and puts a stop to that as he tells the mother to come around to the side of the gurney where Archie is standing where he is forced to tell her that they are discontinuing life saving measures explaining that his condition was far to severe to help him. She becomes hysterical and rushes into the room where his teacher is being treated. When she starts yelling at the teacher things become all too clear. She was having an affair with this woman’s son and she had evidence of their affair with pictures she sent to him and some e-mails as well. She vowed to get her put in jail for what she has done, until she learns that this woman is carrying her grandchild of her dead son.
While all this chaos is going on Abby finds a patient in the waiting room who seemed to be in intense pain. She felt that he had a fever and she took him back to have a better look. When she looked to find the source of the pain, she found a bullet wound in his lower spine. When she initially asked what had happened he said that he had been involved in a drive by shooting, but didn’t call the police because he knew the people involved and they lived in his neighborhood and he feared for his life. His wife explains that he didn’t seek treatment because he doesn’t like doctors. They call for a surgical consult for him, and after his examination it was deemed that he needed surgery after all. If he didn’t he could possibly become paralyzed. But like they say some things are like a double edge sword. Abby was obligated by law to call the police, due to the fact that it was a gunshot. The police came and talked with the man and his wife. The police said that he resembled one of the suspect descriptions, and once the bullet was removed they would be able to prove it was him. He opted to not have the surgery but the law has a way of getting their way. They summoned a court order for the surgery, and while he was in the operating room the police got a search warrant and searched their apartment. The surgery was a success, and once the surgeon was complete he took Abby and the man’s wife to go see him. While walking to his room, the surgeon explained how the bullet mysteriously disappeared and the police had spent an hour looking for it. Abby and the man’s wife seemed relieved. As Abby was helping another patient the police officer’s returned to talk with her. During their search they found $1800.00 in cash and a handgun. So she went up to inform the surgeon of it, and was just in time to see her hauled out of the hospital in handcuffs. Not a good day for this young lady. He on the other hand had a few days to re cooperate before going to meet his cell mate.
After a long hard night in the E.R. Samantha, Chuney and one of the other nurses went out for a little speed dating. Pretty harmless. While there Samantha got to see the police officer who offered to take her out. She claims to not date police officers because of their line of work. Maybe it could be that nasty little murder of her ex-boyfriend not too long ago. But when the conversation turned to Italian food, they left the bar together presumably to get a bite to eat.
Dr. Moretti decides it is time to go talk to Dr. Pratt. He commends him on a job well done in the trauma. And Dr Pratt thanks him for giving him another option in there and promises to listen to his suggestions. It was then that Moretti confronted him on trying to steal his job. Pratt tried to downplay it but that was going no where. Maybe a new found respect for each other with these two? Only time will tell.
Archie and Pratt got the distinct honor of clearing out Ray’s locker. It looks as though he won’t be back for some time. When the new resident asked if he could take that locker they told him it was off limits, leaving him to wonder why, and them not offering an explanation.
Oh and let’s not forget about our little Neela. She is now re cooperating and was talked into staying at Abby’s while Luka is in Croatia. And besides she can get to know little Joe while she is there. We still don’t know exactly why Luka is still there or what exactly summoned him there to begin with. But in the coming weeks that should be all too clear.
Is the honeymoon over for Archie and Hope too? She is talking about going on an adventure with a group somewhat like the peace corps, but the drawback is she will be gone for 6 months. She feels like it is important to her to do it and Archie feels that she is going to get away from him. They did seem a little grouchy towards one another. Maybe in this case like does not speak to like.
Well and off once again to wait another week to find out what’s going to happen. It should be interesting to say the very least. Don’t forget to watch NBC Thursday nights at 10/9 c.
