Purchasing collectibles on eBay can be one of the most enjoyable pastimes around because you can find things on eBay for prices that quite simply you cannot find anywhere else. Collectibles sold in other venues can be quite a bit more expensive than what you will find on eBay. There are of course exceptions, but there are still many more deals for collectibles on Ebay than anywhere else, and you don’t have to leave the comfort of your home.
Here are some tips that will help you when purchasing collectibles on eBay.
Tip 1: Do your research. This is very important because you will want to locate your category. When it comes to collectibles, in most cases all the items you might be interested in are probably going to be under one category. So once you locate your category, then you can bookmark the page so you can check it often.
Tip 2: Be wary of descriptions given by sellers. For example, many sellers use the term “rare” in order to make buyers think the item is more special than it actually may be, and maybe to even get a higher price for it than it is actually worth. In some cases the item isn’t rare or special at all. If you see something that you have never seen before, or if you find something labeled rare or with some other term denoting that it is special, and that you know is not, don’t purchase the collectible.
Tip 3: Check for items that are misspelled. Typically these items get less bids than items that are spelled correctly. You may find some really good deals on collectibles all because people are particular and don’t want to look at items that have been spelled incorrectly.
Tip 4: Follow what other eBay users are buying. You will notice over time that there are sellers that consistently have good items. Bookmark the seller’s pages so that you can check them from time to time and see if there are any items you’d be interesting in bidding on. It will become apparent over time who the good sellers are, and you will want to be sure and follow them so that you have a chance to purchase the items that are high quality.
Tip 5: Keep your eyes open for seller’s mistakes. Not everyone that sells collectibles on eBay are experts, or are even aware of what the collectibles they are trying to sell are truly worth. If the seller has left off any key information, you should contact them just to be sure the item is what you think it is before placing a bid. Checking the listings regularly in your category could yield collectibles that you can purchase for a price far lower than what the collectible is worth. Hence, you save money which leaves you more money to purchase other collectibles or whatever else you might like. Of course you also have the option of reselling the item at a big profit if that is what you wish.
Tip 6: Pay attention to the postage. When you purchase several small collectibles from several different sellers, you could end up paying the same amount in postage that you did for the collectibles themselves. So, take the price of postage into account when you are bidding. Another option is to purchase two or three small collectibles from the same seller, that way you can almost always get a discount on the postage.
Tip 7: Don’t get into bidding wars with other buyers. Some buyers on eBay get so attached to a particular auction that they are willing to pay anything to get the item. If there are one or two other people also willing to pay anything it is easy to get into a bidding war. Remember, no collectible is so rare that another one will not come around again later. Instead of getting into a bidding war with other buyer(s) go and participate in a less expensive auction, read a book, or anything different so that you don’t end up spending way more than the collectible is actually worth.
Tip 8: Outbid people in cents rather than larger amounts. For example if someone bids .75 make your bid .77 or .78 cents, that way you will outbid them by just a few cents and not lose a lot of money trying outbid someone for the collectible you want. This can save you a lot of money in the long run.
These are just a few ideas for how to purchase collectibles on eBay, there are of course other strategies that you can employ. However, these tips will help you find what you are looking for when it comes to collectibles and save money too!
