Harper’s Ferry National Historic Park is not only the most visited site in Jefferson County, it is the most visited site in all of WV. In a state with as many historic and tourist sites as West Virginia this is quite an honor. Harper’s Ferry is a significant site for many reasons but is most famous for being the site of John Brown’s raid. John Brown was an abolitionist who led a band of followers on a raid of the federal arsenal in Harper’s Ferry. The raid of the armory was designed to provide firearms and ammunition in order to lead a slave revolt. The band was defeated by federal troops by Robert E. Lee who just a few years later would lead the Confederate Army in the Civil War. John Brown would be hanged for his actions.
Another historically significant site in Jefferson County WV is commemorated by the James Rumsey Monument. The monument marks the site on the Potomac River where Rumsey demonstrated the first steamboat.
