Far Cry 2 is a first person shooting game released on the Playstation 3 and developed by Ubisoft Montreal. Yet another first person shooter game this time around, but the first Far Cry was quite good. How does this one fare? Let’s find out.
Story : You’re a secret agent blah blah blah gotta kill evil guys blah blah. In short, there’s absolutely nothing here that you haven’t seen before. They didn’t put much effort into it and it shows. Still, at least there’s some kind of backdrop as most first person shooter games don’t have any at all. Also, I don’t like to spoil things in reviews but I will say that this is perhaps the worst ending I’ve seen in a video game. I’ve seen Nintendo one screen endings that were more satisfying than this. If you like to be rewarded with a good ending, don’t play this game.
Graphics : This game, graphically, is really quite excellent. Even though it’s not as immersive as everybody seems to say, the jungle atmosphere is still pretty decent and is fun to look at. Also, not many jungle first person shooters are available so those looking for a change of pace need look no further. Everything is drawn and animated well, and the detail in the jungle is very admirable. Overall, a great effort.
Sound : The sound of this game is equally impressive. The sound effects are all well done and appropriate. The gun sounds are really good and really get you into the game, as they sound very engaging. The tribal music is really neat too, and isn’t something you hear in a first person game usually.
Game play : Right off the bat, I’ll tell you that it doesn’t matter which character you play as. They’re all identical, which really defeats the point of having a selection of characters in the first place. Just pick who you think looks the coolest, I suppose. Aside from that, everything in this game is basically like any other first person shooter and the game play is no exception. If you’ve ever played one before, this one won’t be anything new and isn’t even done particularly well. The environment isn’t very fun to explore and even though it should feel like some kind of jungle adventure, it just doesn’t do enough to put you in the world. There’s a good variety of weapons but once again there’s nothing here that you haven’t seen before. Still, they’re done fairly well and give you a satisfying feeling when you use them. One big gripe I have about this game is the weapons always jam, and then you have to unjam them. This is random and is really annoying. The kicker? Your enemies’ weapons never jam. Great. Damage in this game is actually very cool. When low on health, you can perform field surgery on yourself which is really entertaining and quite amazing.
Re playability : Honestly? The game is beatable in a few days and after that there isn’t much reason at all to ever play it again. The multi player engine is decent enough but isn’t above the multi player of other games. Overall I’ll say the game isn’t that re playable.
Overall : 6/10. A distinctly average game with great graphics and a crap story.
