Summer is almost halfway over. What this also means is that it will soon be time for many of you to leave for other towns or states and embark on your journeys through college. One of the most common misconceptions that many college students have is that you are destined to put on some type of weight as a college freshman. This weight is often referred to as the “freshman 50.” Luckily, however, you do not need to put on weight while you are away at college. Here are several things that you can do in order to avoid putting on weight at college.
Avoid The Junk Food
There is no doubt that grabbing a bag of potato chips is much easier than cooking yourself a healthy well balanced meal. Unfortunately, the more and more that you eat potato chips or other types of junk food, the more and more weight that you will probably find yourself gaining. The best way to avoid putting on weight is to make sure that you avoid eating junk food. Instead of grabbing a bag of potato chips, why not stock up on some pre-made salads to keep in your dorm’s refrigerator for when you get hungry. In the morning, why not stock up on some healthy multigrain bars or fresh fruit, such as bananas or grapes? There are other alternatives to eating junk food which may be just as easy to prepare.
Avoid Unhealthy Fast Food
Much like eating junk food, eating fast food is a lot easier than cooking for yourself as well. Eating fast food on a regular basis is not healthy for you and you can expect it to be one of the primary causes of any weight gain that you may experience. If you are going to eat fast food, you should make sure that you choose something which is not too unhealthy. For example, if you are thinking about getting McDonalds, you should opt for a salad and use your own low fat salad dressing. If you are going to order pizza, instead of ordering a pie filled with meat, you should order just plain cheese or vegetables, which tend to have less calories than the meaty pies which you are used to.
Avoid Calorie Packed Alcohol
Alcohol is loaded with calories. Many college students feel that it is necessary for them to drink with their friends because that is the “socially accepted” thing to do. You should keep in mind that, aside from it being illegal for you to drink underage, you will also put on pounds if you drink too much alcohol. Since there are many people who are conscious about their weight nowadays, it is becoming more and more socially acceptable to pass on alcohol. You can always opt for a non-alcoholic drink, which tends to offer a lot less calories. If the pressure to drink feels like too much for you to handle, you might want to skip the parties and hit the books.
Don’t Forget To Exercise
Exercise is a key to remaining healthy. If you are interested in not getting any weight while you are away at college, it is important to make sure that you try to fit some type of exercise into your regular schedule. This can mean taking some type of gym class, an out-of-school dance or yoga class, or just running the track several times a week. As a college student, you may get caught up in your studies, but it is important to keep in mind that exercise is always a key to not putting on weight.
