So you finally have decided the date night with your spouse is long overdue. You got think you have the Saturday evening plans all wrapped up with dinner reservations made and have already purchased the movie tickets in advance. Well, the most important step still remains, securing a babysitter to watch the kids. Finding a trustworthy babysitter is not easy step. Most people usually find the greatest trust in relatives such as grandparents or aunts and uncles to watch the kids for the evening. People that have such constant access to helping relatives are very fortunate. There are many of us out there that do not have a readily available parent or aunt to come over and watch the kids on date night. We then have to look outside the family network to find a qualified babysitter.
The first place to begin your search for a qualified babysitter is to ask friends. Friends and neighbors are usually good point references to recommend a sitter that works well with children. If you are still suspicious of a referred babysitter from a friend, do not hesitate asking the potential babysitter for a list of references. Be aware that when approaching some friends about babysitter referrals, you may get some hesitation as these people may be reluctant to handover their own trusty babysitter to benefit your needs.
Another good area to pursue potential babysitters is through the church. Post a help wanted sign on the church bulletin board requesting the services of a babysitter. The church bulletin boards seem to draw a lot of attention to member and this would be a great way to find a trustworthy sitter. Again, even though this teenager belongs to your congregation, it would be wise to also pursue a list of references prior to retaining services.
Besides posting an advertisement at your place of worship, also consider going to the local high school and see if the administration office has a referral network. Teenagers have a way of burning through money very quickly thus they will need to find some part time work to supplement their spending. It would make sense that they would seek out employment through postings submitted to high school administrators or guidance counselors for earning money.
You may also find it beneficial to join or start a baby-sitting cooperative with friends or neighbors. This cooperative would consist of every household taking care of another household’s children for an evening. The participation in the cooperative would have to be tracked as to avoid one family or member taking advantage of the other members. This cooperative can be very beneficial if done correctly as the members will not have to pay sitting wages. The children will also benefit by already knowing the other members of your cooperative. Also make sure you are comfortable with every participating member of the cooperative, so try and keep the group size minimal such as three or four households.
