Many times people want to attend the fireworks, but really don’t want to deal with the crowds that the larger cities attract and the transportation nightmares. There is an alternative as many smaller cities in between Baltimore and Washington have their own firework displays according to this list from About.com.
This isn’t to say that you will not have any traffic issues when attending these events, but they should be less severe than the ones that you will face when trying to get to the fireworks either at the National Mall in Washington,DC or the harbor in Baltimore, MD. The displays might be slightly less extravagant than these two larger displays, but in reality you will miss very little. You will still be able to experience dazzling displays of fireworks on July 4th. By choosing these locations though you might find a higher level of convenience, especially if you have to work the next day.
There are fireworks at local stadiums in both Bowie and Arnold, Maryland. The fireworks in Bowie are held at the Baysox stadium and start after the Baysox game that night so you can enjoy both a baseball game and the fireworks in one evening. Meanwhile, at the Anne Arundel Community College’s stadium in Arnold you can attend their fireworks before the fourth of July on June 30th which is a Saturday.
If you don’t want to attend the Baysox game, Bowie does have another location for fireworks on the 4th at Allen Pond Park with the festivities starting at 3 in the afternoon and fireworks being launched shortly after dark. Nearby to Bowie is Laurel, which as an all day event starting at 11 am at Granville Gude Park, with a car show, and then fireworks just after dusk.
If you are looking for all day activities, you could always visit the city of Annapolis and enjoy the town during the day. The parade will start just after 5:00 with a firework display after dark. The starting time in Annapolis varies, but in general is between 9:00 and 9:15. Some of the best viewing areas are the city dock area and the Naval Academy grounds. Another all day option is Six Flags, where you can enjoy the amusement park during the day, and the fireworks just after dark.
Greenbelt and Columbia also have firework displays, with entertainment starting in the mid to late afternoon. Greenbelt’s celebration is at Buddy Attick Park and starts at 4:00 with various entertainment, and the fireworks will begin after dark. Meanwhile Columbia’s festivities are held at Lake Kittamaquandi, with entertainment starting in the middle of the afternoon, and the firework display just after dark at approximately 9:30.
Wherever you choose to view the fireworks, make sure you travel safely and do not drink and drive. Keep in mind with this being a holiday there will be a strong police presence on the roads. Traffic will likely be heavier in the early evening for most events, so if you want to beat the rush make a day of it and enjoy the entertainment offerings each location has before the fireworks. Have a safe and happy July 4th.
